That morning, Chief Mascol and her EMS partner crossed the Brooklyn Bridge and responded to Ground Zero. The horror of that day will forever be seared into the minds of an entire generation of Americans. 25 years later, it is incumbent upon all of us to never forget those we lost, and the heroes who gave their lives or have fallen ill in the years since, doing everything they could to save as many people as possible. Today, Lower Manhattan is reinvented, alive, dynamic, and flourishing because we got the federal government to direct $20 billion for recovery, and because so many people in City Hall, in Albany, in Washington, in their businesses and in their homes refused to let the nihilism and violence and hate of 9/11 be the last word. I’m grateful to all of them. May the next 25 years see Lower Manhattan, New York City, and all of America reach new heights.
