There is nothing shocking in Surya Siddhanta. It becomes shocking only because of making absurd claims. The declination of Agastya (Canopus) was -78° 14′ in 12000 BCE, so it was NOT the South Pole Star by any stretch of imagination. It was nearly 12° or 24 full moon diameters away from South Celestial Pole and calling it South Pole Star is simply absurd. The extreme point in south in mainland India is Kanyakumari at a latitude of 8.09° North. This means that the horizon from Kanyakumari is 90° away at ~ -82°. So, the South Celestial Pole is ~8° below horizon from the most southern point of India. Thus a South Pole Star has never been visible from India and never will be.
