You/he need to stop referring to the United States as a Democracy. We are NOT a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic and the difference is critical to understand. A Democracy is able to pass any laws without restriction based on popular representative vote (i.e. rights are given/taken away by government). A Constitutional Republic works the same process wise, but limits the governments power to that outlined in the Constitution. (i.e. rights are inherent to individuals and government can't give/take away any of them). Not necessarily relevant to this specific clip, but is foundational to the details for all the other topics that go deeper.
