The Oceans Are Not Unlimited More people = more demand for food, including seafood. The oceans are not an unlimited supermarket. Overfishing is putting growing pressure on fish populations, while lost and abandoned nets, lines and traps continue drifting through the oceans, killing marine life long after the fishing boats have gone. As populations grow, the total demand placed on the oceans grows with them. In some societies, greater affluence also increases demand for premium seafood. Regulations can help, but policing vast oceans is difficult, enforcement is uneven, and corruption or weak oversight can turn good rules into little more than words on paper. Paper rules do not replenish fish stocks. They do not remove ghost fishing gear from the ocean. More people consuming from a finite ocean means more pressure on that ocean. Reality does not negotiate. Ms. Qii
