Future Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was in the crowd after traveling to England to spend time with Diamond Head. With Black Sabbath forced to withdraw, Ozzy Osbourne stepped in for a rare UK solo performance alongside Randy Rhoads, while Motörhead headlined at the height of their No Sleep ’til Hammersmith success. Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt has revealed that he turned down Ozzy Osbourne when he was asked to join his band in 1995—and shares last words he said to him. Nuno was being interviewed on the red carpet at the VMAs, where he was scheduled to perform a tribute to Ozzy alongside Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Yungblud. We’d like to thank Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, for inspiring us all these years, as well as Sharon Osbourne and Tom Morello for making it all happen. It was an epic day of celebration, community, and sharing that will never be replicated. So proud to stand with my brothers on that stage and watch the legendary bands and musicians who killed it as well. To Black Sabbath, Ozzy, the city of Birmingham, and to all the fans at Villa Park as well as those who watched the broadcast from around the world: Much love and respect. 🤘🏻😎
