On This Day in Metal August 1, 1981 Around 40,000 fans packed Port Vale Stadium for the legendary Heavy Metal Holocaust festival. Future Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was in the crowd after traveling to England to spend time with Diamond Head. With Black Sabbath forced to withdraw, Ozzy Osbourne stepped in for a rare UK solo performance alongside Randy Rhoads, while Motörhead headlined at the height of their No Sleep ’til Hammersmith success. This rare footage, filmed by Philthy Animal Taylor’s father, captures Lemmy introducing Ozzy Osbourne before Ozzy takes the stage. "But then to get to know them and form a relationship with them, honor them at their final show, and receive this because of it, is something that I, and I think we're all, are finding so strange to comprehend.
