San Francisco’s RESET center is set to open May 4th. It’s a new model that allows police officers to quickly arrest those engaged in public drug use and bring them to a health-focused facility where they can sober up and have a chance to be connected to treatment. I ran for mayor because I couldn’t explain to my kids why they were seeing people using drugs at a bus stop on a Monday morning—and as a parent and as mayor, I can’t accept that. With the RESET Center, we are making it clear: if you use drugs on our streets, there will be consequences, but there will also be a real path to recovery.

For too long, San Francisco has allowed people engaged in public drug use to cycle through jail, the ER, or simply remain on the streets—without real accountability or real help. This new RESET Center marks a fundamental change: if you do drugs on our streets, you will be arrested. And instead of sending you back out in crisis, we will give you a chance to stabilize and enter recovery. This is about enforcing the law, getting people off the streets, and connecting them to treatment—while getting officers back on patrol and restoring safety and order for our neighborhoods. New legislation we introduced this week will keep the RESET Center on track to open this spring.

The RESET Center has been open just over 24 hours, and already dozens of people using drugs in public have been brought off the streets. This is a new model that we are using in San Francisco to bring people on the streets into a health focused facility where they can have a chance to be connected to treatment. This center is making it easier for officers to get back on the beat while giving people a real opportunity for treatment. We’re also hearing reports that staff have connected people with case managers who had been trying to reach them. This is an important new tool to help keep our streets safe and clean.

We’re now at the lowest level of unsheltered homelessness in 15 years and we have opened the RESET Center, a new tool that allows us to enforce the law while giving people struggling with addiction an alternative to jail and a path to treatment. After one month, the RESET Center has seen more than 500 admissions, with nearly one-third accepting care and treatment. It’s also helping officers get back on the street in under 20 minutes instead of spending hours on the jail booking process. I just finished my third ride along with SFPD since being elected Supervisor in San Francisco. Here's what I saw and learned: - The drug market is significantly smaller since last year. - Due to increased SFPD enforcement and action from our DA, the drug market has constrained its hours of operation to midnight to three am. - The dealers themselves are adapting to increased enforcement, and shifting from selling in crowds to instead becoming mobile and doing drop-offs increasingly. - The drug market has in turn shifted into smaller pockets dispersed in Hayes, Mission, upper Tenderloin - The RESET center is also starting to help individuals suffering on our streets with an alternative to jail SFPD, the DA's office, and Mayor's office are all working together to create new strategies now to tackle this changing landscape to the open air drug market.

Eight weeks ago, this on-ramp had people living in encampments. Today, it is clean, and our outreach teams have connected with those struggling on the street. Thanks to an agreement with Caltrans and Secretary Toks Omishakin, the City is now able to clean our freeway entrances and connect people to services and treatment. This is another step forward in making our streets cleaner and safer for everyone.

I got a inside look at Mayor Lurie’s triage center that he’s setting up on 6th and Jesse Street it’s not completely finished, but once it is SFPD will start arresting people for using drugs in public because being in possession of drugs to use is a crime they will come here and get offered services and if they refuse……. well, let’s say you know what happens then.

Thank you to our officers for getting a large amount of narcotics off the street that were earmarked for sale in San Francisco. Our Drug Market Agency Coordination Center (DMACC) will stay relentless in getting results for San Franciscans.
