When they picked him as Geralt I was very doubtful. Turned out to be the only good thing about the show 😅

One of the best answers I’ve ever heard to a question.

And interestingly, not one fan was upset with Cavill’s portrayal at Geralt. Just the writing of the show. Cavill nailed it. The reason for that is that fans of the books and the games loved that world. But Netflix (in this example) 1) took control of the thing fans loved, 2) decided that what the fans loved wasn’t good, and 3) changed what the fans love into something that Netflix THINKS people ought to love. Fans will forgive changes in the story if it makes sense for the genre or still incorporates love for the IP (see Peter Jackson’s LotR, Jack Reacher show and movies, Harry Potter movies, etc.). But when showrunners want to “retell the stories for a modern audience” and “subvert fan expectations,” what they’re saying is that fans of the original(s) are outdated/bigoted/stupid and the showrunner(s) and new fans are better than them. (See Rings of Power, Disney Star Wars/Indiana Jones, Wheel of Time, etc.).

Cavill is a fan himself. He understands the personal individual relationship a fan has with these stories and characters. It's difficult not to love the guy for it. Kindred spirits and all that.

I wish more people in Hollywood understood this. So much extra backlash against shows and movies is caused by push back by creators on the long time fans. If they say they don't like something, take the constructive criticism and move on. Don't try to "own the chuds" and create what YOU think is best for the franchise. "YOU" are not the target audience, your fans are. When you target an audience of one, you get an audience of one. We have plenty of examples just this year of this happening. Meanwhile, shows like Shogun remain mostly faithful to the source material and are praised by fans while ALSO bringing on new fans.

Man bears the greatest damn curse He’ll get the roles any nerd would dream of but at the cost of getting saddled with the worst writers a nerd could dream of.

Apparently, we need to force more chubby little nerds to go to the gym when they come of age.

He has it all. He should be the Tom Cruise of his generation. Hollywood is messing up with him continually.
