I've heard this idea of having to work harder because of your skin color, many manyyy times. Who exactly does it help to tell kids this? Just tell them to work hard like everyone else!

This is a performance, she keeps looking into the camera, she gets more impassioned, she thinks that saying this is going to make her a famous civil Rights activist. 🤔 If only it were true. 🤨

"You gotta be three times as good"? No, "You have to be three times as good." I hope she does not teach English grammar!

Honestly, I don’t mind it. Maybe it’ll spark something in those kids so they aren’t a statistic.

Public high school teacher of black, white, and Hispanic kids. My students do not know my politics other than that I love America. If they ask, and they do sometimes, I talk about policies I like without naming any politicians in particular. I’ve never had a student disagree with legal immigration, or justice for crimes, for example. I try to educate, not indoctrinate. We truly need to get back to that.

Pro: she’s trying to use cultural context to motivate students to take their education seriously. Con: the cultural context is a limiting belief that is NOT as good a motivator as intrinsic values or goals.
