I want to speak directly to San Francisco’s public-school parents and our students. I know many of you are worried about the possibility of a teacher strike that could temporarily close schools—and I want you to hear this clearly from me: our kids come first. As mayor, even though I don’t oversee our school district, I’m deeply committed to making sure our kids get a world-class education—with safe public schools where kids can learn and educators are well supported. It is crucial that our schools remain open. Every day in the classroom matters. I have been in regular contact with both the school district and the teachers union, and I am urging them to keep talking so kids can keep learning. Our working parents can’t afford to stay home if schools are closed. Our special needs students can’t afford to lose access to vital services that help them succeed. Schools are the foundation that makes daily life possible and helps every family in San Francisco thrive. I am also actively working with city departments to ensure we have options for our students in the event that classrooms do close. The real question is why this psychopath in Nashville was able to get into the school in the first place. We protect green pieces of paper in a bank with more armed guards than we do our kids in schools. We pay for Thousands Standing Around (TSA) in our airports. There’s more security at a random mall than in a public school. We spend $80BN+ per year through the U.S. Dept of Education that helps fund radical gender ideology to create psychopaths, yet don’t protect kids in our schools from being killed by them. That’s wrong. I’ll shut down the U.S. Dept of Education and use the savings to protect every kid in America from something like this from ever happening again. This shouldn’t be controversial.

She has students that she has written an incident report on every single day. She has contacted the principal and the support staff and the help that was given to her was to email the parents of the students. Basically, no help or support at all. We have many epidemics in our country but this is one of the biggest that doesn’t get enough attention. We all know our school system is a failure but even more than we know. Students these days have zero consequences. They are passed with straight F’s. They are allowed to be a continuing distraction and disruption in the classrooms and nothing is done about it. I can tell almost instantly when I meet a young man or woman, whether he or she is a deep thinker. They may not be at the top of their class, but that doesn’t necessarily make them less intelligent than the kid who scored 1500 on his SAT or the guy with an IQ of 134. They may be more intelligent. Much more intelligent, but the methods we have for quantifying that intelligence do not adequately capture the breadth and depth of brilliant minds that exist in the world. So they go unrecognized while the kids who excel on answer-based examinations get the best grades, attend the best schools, earn the best degrees, and, more often than not, go on to have mediocre lives. Why? There is one thing that the most brilliant and accomplished people I have ever met all share in common, and it isn’t pedigree or IQ. It’s curiosity. And not just any curiosity—it’s the inexhaustible kind. It’s the kind that will never be satisfied. In my experience, this is the sort of curiosity that breeds humility and most often coincides with a questions-based mindset. And it’s this type of mindset, not the answers-based mindset our educational system selects for, that is the actual prerequisite for brilliance. I’ve seen this kind of brilliance in physical therapists, plumbers, and pretty much any profession you can imagine that we don’t typically associate with brilliance. But we do associate it with excellence. And that’s because to become excellent at something, you have to become your own teacher. This means going from learning how to give the right answers to learning how to ask the right questions. And that requires curiosity and an almost psychotic commitment to excellence. So, while the person in this video is correct that less intelligent people than he are far more successful than he has been, the more interesting and less remarked upon insight is that people like him are not as brilliant as the system tells us they are.

I’ve saved this clip from 2024. Maybe you’re a parent that needs to hear it now and maybe you’re a parent that needs to bookmark it for later to come back to. Either way if you have watched your child sacrifice the norms to not be of the norm and watched them fall short you can relate. For those that aren’t at this level yet- remember every match/game/point is big to them in moment and I think we minimize that thinking we are helping them when in reality we are protecting our own self from the hurt we feel when our child is hurting. Struggle and failure are life’s biggest teaching tools. They are also some of the most painful to go through, but more so to watch someone you love go through. I hope this helps some parents- now or in the future or even those parents of kids at the younger ages. Hopefully you focus on building healthy relationships with your kids over their win loss record. Hopefully you are praising them not only in their successes, but also in their failures of trying so they continue to just that- try.

Why is there a push to close Chicago Public Schools on May 1? According to the Illinois State Board of Education, only 1 in 3 CPS elementary students are proficient in reading and only 1 in 5 are proficient in math. Our kids need more time in the classroom, not less, yet Chicago parents are being asked for their kids to lose another day of school on May 1st for a political Day of Action. Parents and kids rely on schools for learning and consistency. Closing schools will send parents scrambling for babysitters or losing wages to stay home to care for their kids. For some kids, schools are where they get their meals and are the safest place they’ll be that day. How would students in situations like this turn out if the government pays their school fees but neglects to provide for their teaching and learning needs? The heads of schools are afraid to complain because they fear victimisation from the government. At the end of the day, the government boasts about the numbers that go through secondary school and credits that to the Free SHS policy. But would you like your son or daughter to go through this? This is a school in the Greater Accra Region. Some rural basic and secondary schools are worse than this.

Her apartment is nearly empty, her refrigerator barely has anything in it at all, she has a car that works when it wants to, so where does all her money go to? The answer is she feels it’s necessary to make sacrifices so that her kids can have everything they need to be excited and engaged about learning. We always hear about how important their jobs are since they are teaching our kids and raising them in for us in many other ways. Since school funding can be tight, instead of teachers having to pay for everything to teach our kids, would it be appropriate or acceptable if at the beginning of the year the parents are charged a small materials fee for each child so teachers don’t have to spend their own money?

Since school funding can be tight, instead of teachers having to pay for everything to teach our kids, would it be appropriate or acceptable if at the beginning of the year the parents are charged a small materials fee for each child so teachers don’t have to spend their own money?
