I'm a non-hispanic latina, but i feel like the moment i learned in spanish the way i wanted was: when i started to understand the Caribbean Spanish. My listening perception is evolving so much. And yes I never been in anywhere outside my country.

I worked at a kids clothing store and had a frustrated customer because she didn’t speak english AND didn’t like my Spanish. Like an idiot I apologized and switched… not doing that shit ever again… Ask an argentinian or chilean to switch their accent for us…yea, never happens
