The Herrenknecht TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) breakthrough is a significant event in the construction of the Belchen renovation tunnel in Switzerland. The project involved a Herrenknecht Single Shield TBM, which is a type of machine used for digging tunnels through various geological conditions. This particular TBM was used to create a new tunnel tube parallel to the existing Belchen tunnel system, which is an essential part of the north-south road traffic route via Gotthard in Switzerland. The Belchen renovation tunnel cuts through the Jura Mountains between Basel and Lucerne and is crucial for both international and domestic Swiss traffic. Due to increasing rock pressure, the existing two-lane dual carriageway tubes of the A2 road tunnel required urgent repair for operational safety. The new refurbishment tunnel was driven through the mountain at a distance of between 40 and 116 meters from the existing tunnel system. The Herrenknecht TBM faced challenging ground conditions, including soft layers of rock alternating with up to 225 MPa hard layers, karstified and/or water-bearing transition zones, squeezing opalinus clay, and swelling gypsum keuper. Despite these challenges, the TBM crew managed to complete the tunnel breakthrough at the northern portal at Eptingen after approximately 16 months of tunnelling, which was three months ahead of the original schedule.

Wow impressive! The largest tunnel boring machine has a shield diameter of **17.63 meters** (57 feet 10 inches). This machine was used to excavate the Chek Lap Kok to Tuen Mun subsea road tunnel in Hong Kong, China.
