Adv Tembeka Ngcukaitobi: “We are asking for a non-custodial punishment, and no one can sensibly say that other forms of punishment do not constitute punishment...you have a range of penal options that would reflect the society’s disapproval.” This is quite interesting coming from Adv Ngcukaitobi. In 2021, during the Zondo Commission/Jacob Zuma ConCourt proceedings, Ngcukaitobi explicitly told the court that the two years imprisonment sought by the Zondo commission was a serious penalty that took into consideration Zuma’s seniority and political standing. He further said the court should consider Zuma’s influence in society and the public nature of his disobedience. And on the question of a suspended sentence, Ngcukaitobi was unambiguous: “The question really is how long Mr Zuma should go to prison for? That he should go to prison should be clear.” To reiterate, in the Julius Malema case today, Ngcukaitobi is arguing that a custodial sentence is not the only option, that there’s a range of penal options available and that imprisonment actually achieves the opposite of what society wants. Yet in the Zuma matter, his position was the exact reverse. He told that court that a fine was out of the question, and that imprisonment was a “clear, effective remedy.” He specifically argued that a suspended sentence was inappropriate for Zuma, and that the only real question was how long Zuma should go to prison, not whether he should. So, the same advocate who argued there was essentially one appropriate punishment, i.e. direct imprisonment for Zuma, is now criticising the prosecution for allegedly thinking there is only one punishment for Malema. ‘PATRIA O MUERTE!’ On this day in 1928, Argentine communist revolutionary Che Guevara was born. As a young medical student, he traveled across Latin America on his motorbike and was appalled by the sheer amount of disease, hunger, and poverty across the continent. He began to view Latin America as dominated and exploited by US capitalism, a belief that hardened after the CIA orchestrated the coup against Guatemala’s President Jacobo Arbenz, destroying much of the reforms he had implemented. In Mexico City, he met two brothers who shared his ideas; Fidel and Raul Castro. From that moment he joined the 26th of July Movement and became instrumental in the success of the Cuban Revolution and the destruction of the US-backed Batista dictatorship. In Cuba’s government, he spearheaded a successful and rapid literacy campaign, enacted land reform to distribute land from bourgeois land owners to Cuban peasants, and played a key role in defeating the CIA’s Bay of Pigs Invasion. After succeeding in Cuba, Guevara left Cuba to assist revolutionary struggles abroad. He would be captured by CIA-backed Bolivian forces. When Mario Terán, the soldier who would execute him, entered the room, Guevara reportedly said “I know you’ve come to kill me. Shoot, coward! You are only going to kill a man.” In death, Che Guevara would become the iconic symbol of revolutionary martyrdom; giving up his own life with no fear, for the cause of fighting oppression and liberating others. Many today want to distort that history and that visit, and frame it as a historical mistake, when Malema was being a responsible leader to protect black life. Zuma, knowing that there would be a loss of life in his name, refused to testify at the Zondo Commission because of pettiness of recusal applications with his friend. The youngest leader, pleaded for wisdom and humility to an elder and a statesman, to no avail. Zuma knew that blood would flow in his name and instead of a simple process of swallowing his pride and talking at the Zondo Commission, was defiant for defiance sake, because he thrives on victimhood Now you tell us, who has the maturity and capacity to lead black unity? He destroyed the ANC by dropping its vote which was increasing under Mbeki. But he now blames Ramaphosa for that. He is drunk. Show me one person who was a friend of Zuma in 2007 and who is still his friend today. He spits everyone. Who are we not not be spat by him! It's all about himself. He destroyed Cosatu, SACP, ANCYL, ANC. He is a wrecking ball. It is Ramaphosa who is introducing pro poor policies which Zuma rejected. Ramaphosa may not be a good singer and dancer, but he is more sympathic to the poor in deeds than Zuma. Zuma is just telling us that he is poor, but his actions show a selfish man. It is not a surprise why ANC loses votes in Nkandla. People there can't relate to him. They will now vote ANC since he has left ANC.

The abuse of state resources by Duduzane Zuma is on steroids. On a visit to Eastern Cape, Duduzane Zuma’s motorcade had full SA Police Service 🇿🇦 escort, his vehicles were fitted with blue lights. His security personal armed with machines guns which are illegal and this was in full view of the South African Police . This is the corrupt Zuma family, not even in power but this much abuse of resources. Just imagine what they will do if they get into power.

NO PAN-AFRICANISM WITHOUT SOCIALISM Revolutionary activist Kwame Ture was born on this day in 1941. Let’s remember him by watching him in action: in this clip, he makes the case that Pan-Africanist ideals can only be realised under socialism, because capitalism is the system of the colonialists. To be good Pan-Africanists, he says, we must also be anti-capitalists. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago and known as Stokely Carmichael, he was politically active in US politics as part of the civil rights movement, and was elected chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1966. He vacated the post a year later and, with his wife - the South African songstress Miriam Makeba - moved to Guinea, where he changed his name to Kwame Ture. This was a tip of the hat to his two patrons, Kwame Nkrumah and Sekou Touré. A leading figure of the Pan-African movement, Ture was instrumental in establishing the All African People's Revolutionary Party. Today, the All-African People's Revolutionary Party (A-APRP) extends across the continent, from Guinea-Bissau to Kenya. The ideas he planted continue informing the struggle for liberation today.

Under the Shah, Ramadan had a familiar voice. Before the 1979 Revolution, Mohammad Javad Zabihi’s recitations of the athan and Quran were regularly broadcast on national radio. He was a muezzin (a religious singer) whose voice was widely heard, and for many, the sound of Islam. The Shah reportedly took a personal liking to Zabihi’s voice, and his recitations sometimes included brief prayers for the Shah (which is normal for a societies ruled by monarchs). Following the Revolution, he was briefly imprisoned for his mere association with the Shah, but was released without charge. Not long after, he was brutally stabbed to death. Newspapers received a photo of his mutilated body, along with a note from an extremist revolutionary cell claiming responsibility.

EXCLUSIVE: Ron Gochez, Union del Barrio, a history teacher at LA public schools and one of the people responsible for organizing the anti ice protests in LA, Paramount, Compton, etc. did an interview with Democracy Now! this morning. Listen to the language he uses. He refers to the people being deported as indigenous to this land and calls it “ancestral land”. This is a revolution. His organization, Union del Barrio, is a Marxist Revolutionary group that also advocates for Palestine. He is trying to paint the illegal aliens as indigenous people with rights to the land.
