The security guard on the boat that capsized in the Kariba disaster says there were 153 people on board, yet the boat was not supposed to carry more than 45 people. According to him, the entire crew died except for him and one other colleague. This is a reflection of how lawlessness has become the order of the day in Zimbabwe. How does a boat licensed to carry no more than 45 people end up carrying 153 people without anyone stopping it? Where were the authorities responsible for enforcing safety regulations and protecting lives? It is also a reflection of how desperate our people have become because of a failed economy and failed governance, fuelled by corruption that has become tolerated from the highest office in the land. When laws are routinely ignored, regulations are not enforced and institutions responsible for public safety are weakened, ordinary people ultimately pay the price, sometimes with their lives.

This shocking news came after he had been inside the holding facility talking to the survivors in the port of Kalamata, he say they told him that the Greek coast guard was towing the boat, then it suddenly capsized. The Greek coast guard has published several report on the fate incident, non of them mentioning anything about towing the boat, so why leave this vital information out of the reports, if true? Since this information has not been reported by the coast guard, the question is, was it left out of the reports because they were not trying to rescue the boat, rather towing it toward Italian waters, or pushing them back. Sinn Féin has always been clear: the EU Migration Pact is not in Ireland’s interest. It is the Irish people who are best placed to make our decisions, not Europe. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are wrong to hand over sovereignty on this issue. Sinn Féin will be calling for a special debate in the Dáil this week. TDs will have an opportunity to vote in support of the debate taking place. We need an international protection system that is fair, managed and properly enforced - one that the people can have confidence in.

The situation in the occupied part of Kherson region is absolutely catastrophic. The occupiers simply abandoned people in these terrible conditions. Without rescue, without water, just on the rooftops in flooded communities. And this is another deliberate crime of Russia: after the terrorist state has caused a disaster, it also maximizes the damage from it. Now we need a clear and quick response from the world to what is happening. It is even impossible to establish for sure how many people in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson region may die without rescue, without drinking water, without food, without medical care. Our military and special services are rescuing people as much as it is possible, despite the shelling. But large-scale efforts are needed. We need international organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, to immediately join the rescue operation and help people in the occupied part of Kherson region. Each person who dies there is a verdict on the existing international architecture and international organizations that have forgotten how to save lives. If there is no international organization in the area of this disaster now, it means that it does not exist at all, that it is incapable of functioning. All the relevant appeals from Ukraine and our government are in place.

UPDATE ON THE MARAKWET EAST LANDSLIDE DISASTER We have managed to evacuate 25 injured people for further medical attention. Sadly, 15 people lost their lives in this unfortunate tragedy, while 30 people are still unaccounted for. Ongoing search and rescue efforts are being undertaken by a multi-agency team comprising the military, police, NGAOs, the county government and humanitarian organizations. We have moved households at risk of landslides to safer grounds and opened a desk for reporting missing persons.

Thar again!!! A group of four drove their Mahindra Thar right into the middle of Balason River near Dundhia in Darjeeling. Suddenly water level of the river rose and sudden flash floods rapidly swelled the river, leaving the m stranded in the middle of the stream. Luckily locals reached their on time and somehow managed to rescue them safely. Thar is not a Boat.
