A major gas field in the UK could supply over 10% of the UK's energy, but that gas isn't destined for the grid. The plan instead is to extract it on site, burn it in a local power plant, and use that electricity to mine bitcoin. The energy will be consumed at the source, because that route is simpler and more profitable. Taxes, regulation and grid constraints all add friction. The gas could power homes. It isn't. Because burning it on site makes more money. That is a damning indictment of UK energy policy.

What Asiwaju saw in 1999. He attempted to break the monopoly of NEPA, decentralise power distribution and create a separate electricity market in Lagos. Of course, he was frustrated. But as God would have it, 3 weeks after becoming President in 2023, he signed the new electricity act to allow states to take ownership of the electricity market in their domains. I am a fan of decentralised electricity markets. I don't believe that the electricity rate per kWh should be constant across the country. The cost of electricity per kWh in California is different from Washington DC. The rate is different in London and Bristol. The market cost of electricity should be determined by local factors. Infrastructure, transmission cost ( distance ) distribution cost, demand and pricing strategies should differ. Niger state just like Washington is the Hydro power leader in Nigeria. The market realities should be different in Niger State. The per kWh rate of electricity is cheaper in Washington than the National US average. I would like to see how states, especially the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission manage their electricity market with the new tariffs. Govt's role in electricity generation, distribution and supply is limited. Govt doesn't generate electricity in Europe and other developed countries. Private players do and for them to thrive, we must create a conducive market.

🇧🇫 Just In .. A new power plant is nearing completion on the outskirts of Ouagadougou. Many others are also under construction and are expected to be completed before year end. Captain IB promised that every region will have its own power plants. Since mid-2025, Burkina Faso has been producing 51% of its electricity needs. It imports around 38% from Ghana, while the remainder is split between Togo and Ivory Coast. By 2030, as outlined in the detailed development plan, Burkina Faso will produce 100% of its electricity needs domestically. And this is all before the construction of the nuclear power plant. New Zealand PM Chris Luxon rejects outright the suggestion that his govt might use nuclear power. Instead, Mr Luxon wants to double the supply of “renewables”. He says nuclear would be unsuitable because of NZ’s earthquake problem. However the threat of earthquakes in Japan is pretty similar to NZ and they are expanding their nuclear energy resources. In 2023, nuclear power accounted for approximately 8.5% of Japan's electricity supply. They intend to increase this to 20-22% by 2030. Partly to reduce CO2 emissions in line with Japan’s Net Zero obligations. So why is it OK for Japan but not New Zealand? IMHO the renewables obsessed Mr Luxon and the gormless CEOs running our mainly govt owned energy generation/ transmission companies are going to send NZ industry to the wall. Leaving aside the effect constantly rising electricity prices have on the man in the street. Through grocery prices and other everyday purchases. If we leave coal, hydro, gas and geothermal aside for the sake of the argument, nuclear may or not be a viable energy option for NZ. However it can’t be any worse than the fools errand we are presently on with wind and solar.
