I disagree. The reason we translate it into English is because of our own multi ethnic language and culture. The Igbo man wants to make it easy for the Edo man to understand him, and wants the Kanuti man, etc, to understand him. Vice versa. It’s not the English man we try to impress. But the gen z and some village brought up gen X won’t know how it was growing up in cities far from your local lingua franca, and trying to explain nri ji to a Yoruba man and differentiate it from akpu

Ema is not pounded yam!! Before you come for me, I served in Iruekepen, Ekpoma, Edo State and even stayed there for another one year after NYSC. Ema is like fufu not pounded Yam!! Just like Kpukpuru is like fufu in Ondo State

@mlffx_ Ema isn't pounded yam. Ema is made from cassava and pounded yam is made from Yam. They are two different things.

@JasonID4 Edo State has a variety of languages and cultures. Maybe that's where the misconception comes from. For an Edo person who speaks Edo language and lives in Benin City, Ema is made from yam and called pounded yam in English.

@mlffx_ @JasonID4 He is right the esan people call fufu Ema, while we Benin call pounded yam ema.

This is rubbish. Nigeria is a multi lingual country. As an Igbo person, I don’t know what Eko is. Same with others who are not Edo. The reasons why we feel a need to translate is cos of our language differences. It has nothing to do with not being proud of their African names.

This is apt! Iyan, Eba, Moinmoin, gari, akara etc should retain their local names. Also, people should know it's not a flex to give your child English names. Neither is it a flex that your children can't speak your native language.

I think this explanation is unfair to all meals tho. You don’t see people renaming Egusi soup, Ewedu, Gbegiri, afang and the rest. We’ve also got our pride man. Eba, Amala, fufu etc. we don’t bend over backwards for no one. There must have been an explanation for this ones you chose. 🫥

It’s even funny as we see it insulting to use hands to eat Eba so we have started using spoon but when we travel to country like turkey, Dubai we use hand to eat rice there traditional way. Nigerians should be proud of their culture and way of life

I don’t know how to say it but he’s right and wrong, when a particular food from a particular region has many language it’s best to give it a university language… why not use awedu or oha, there is no other native name just it, if it gets to international standard it’ll remain

I get your point but the analogy does’t hold. Sushi is a general term, unlike pounded yam which has different names across tribes. It’s hard to explain ourselves to foreigners when we cant even agree among ourselves. Even this video is in a foreign language, not our local dialect

Nigeria does nt hv a common language other than English.u don't expect Nigeria 2 call pounded yam Ema in edo language or iyan in yoruba language coz other tribe won't understand it n u don't expect all Nigeria 2 call it iyan it will cause fight makin 1 language superior 2 others

We are a diverse people here in Nigeria. Most of the time, we didn't and still don't understand ourselves. We don't even speak pidjin English the same way. Tell someone from the north Nni Ji, Iyan, he doesn't get it. But say - pounded yam and they do. That's the genesis.

Its bcos in Nigeria we have several languages so it gets confusing if it's called a different thing in every restaurant. Common sense.

Brotherman, look at it this way. In Japan, it is generally referred to as sushi. But in Nigeria itself it is neither generally called either ema or iyan. Our multi ethnicity must internationalize label.

Do you know how many languages in Nigeria? These countries you mentioned have just one central language but we don't. You have already called pounded yam two different names from two different languages in Nigeria. Pounded yam became a centralized name for it.

These videos are funny. When your national language is English, having an English name for a food that has other cultural names isn't uncommon. Most of the cultural names that stick, do so for foods notably/primarily from a particular region. Dead the agenda

Nigeria is filled with ignorant people, a lot of us went to school but we still think like closed minded illiterates, so fast to speak rubbish at words of wisdom, even if he may have gone too hard in trying to explain his point, at least, we can't just discredit facts he has said

It may be worth noting that French-speaking Africa tends to keep the traditional names of their dishes, with some of the names eventually making their way into the official French. Some local dishes are attiéké, alloco, foutou, foufou, and kabato
