This video should be compulsory viewing for every net zero-obsessed politician, commentator, teacher and student. Listen to an Oxford Prof explain why the UK’s energy costs are so ridiculously high. It’s all self-inflicted. Net stupid zero indeed.

@AlgernonParry

@AlgernonParry China gets stronger while the West gets weaker. Seems Deliberate.

Oh my god. You just don’t get it do you. If we don’t do Net Zero will be dependent on foreign gas imports from countries we can no longer trust. Is that what you want - to be beholden to Arabs, Russians and Yanks?

In which case it’s incredibly dumb to kill off domestic exploitation of oil and gas in the UK isn’t it?

@PSoffe1 Our gas has run out.

@mikegardner_wb @PSoffe1 🐂💩 the earth makes it's oil it will never rum out

@mikegardner_wb @PSoffe1 @grok at what rate is oil being created by natural forces to replace the oil extracted by man.

Natural oil formation occurs over millions of years through geological processes, at an estimated rate of about 17,000 barrels per year globally. In contrast, human extraction is around 36 billion barrels annually, far outpacing replenishment. Oil is effectively non-renewable on human timescales.

@KevinGSWatt @trebor199 @mikegardner_wb @PSoffe1 @grok can you estimate total gas reserves including those not exploited so far? For example shale gas in the UK.

Global proved natural gas reserves: ~188 trillion cubic meters (6,635 Tcf) as of 2023 (latest BP data; similar for 2026). Total estimated resources (including unexploited/unconventional): ~850 Tcm globally, per EIA/USGS, with shale gas ~207 Tcm. UK shale example: BGS estimates 23–64 Tcm gas in place for Bowland (central ~37 Tcm). Recoverable could be 2–6 Tcm if exploited, but fracking ban persists.

@SpinCat1

Energy prices are high because the YK privatised it and sanctioned the monopoly suppliers of energy to charge exorbitant prices and rip off everyone.

I also liked this reflection

@Stanhope2011VJ Energy suicide committed by the treacherous labour government, these brain dead morons are costing the British public an absolute fortune, why on gods green earth would anyone vote for them??? #Reform

@brexitblog_info I've seen a lot of posts about the economics of Nett Zero, how it doesn’t work, UK only 1% of emissions, destroying our economy etc. BUT there is No Climate Emergency. That's the other accompanying side of this eco lunacy...

Sadly, all those net zero-obsessed politicians, commentators, teachers and students are technically illiterate and are delusionally gripped by the lies of NetZero advocates, whose only interest is making money from this colossal fraud.

@brexitblog_info He won't be invited on the BBC again!

Clearly the answer to “Can renewable energy power the UK” is NO ! another decent question would be is it Eco Friendly ……… NO !!!! so why exactly are we doing it ??? …… Don’t know (ask The Miliband) 🤪🤪😂😂

Here's a secret @mikegardner. While the world changes around them, Oxford profs can remain very much attached to the opinions they have spent a lifetime teaching and publishing. In fact (whisper it) they can even be wrong. Don't tell anyone.

Here’s another not so secret fact. There’s no point in building vast numbers of subsidised wind farms miles away from where people live if you don’t have the network to run the power to where it’s needed. We don’t have that and won’t for decades. Meantime we pay the operators to switch off their wind farms. The whole thing is the wrong way round.

@mikegardner As you say, the National Grid was not designed to cope with a decentralised energy supply. That's why the grid is investing £bns in upgrades, & creating 1000s of jobs in the process. Aim is a largely decarbonised electricity supply by 2030. Not decades. Why so defeatist?

Astonishing that successive governments have literally crippled British industry with insane energy policies. Everyone in the UK is now paying the price for crazy decisions made by government ministers.

@SapperDefence Does he mention the profit taking and dividend payments by those private energy companies?

Backup will be provided by storage & interconnectors. Combined cycle gas turbine plants typically have a lifespan of 20/30 years & 43% of UK CCGT capacity was built before the year 2000. Prof H forgets the cost of replacement, and the cost of gas bought on the global market.

There is no “storage” that can power the UK on days when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine. There is no prospect of a battery that will do so in the foreseeable future. As the Prof says, we have to double up on generation capacity, grid etc to cover the same energy need. Hugely inefficient & costly. We don’t need to do it.

@Graham4Health @janemilnerbarry Sadly there isn’t quite enough Ed Miliband bullshit to store energy The cost and efficiency of mass battery back-up should be debated and then scrapped as a potential saviour of intermittent wind and solar

@mikegardner_wb @janemilnerbarry This despite exponential growth in Ed Miliband’s BS since July 2024. Did you catch Kisin’s surgical take down of #NetZero on @bbcquestiontime?

@stockypig @mikegardner_wb @bbcquestiontime

Will those #NetZero zealots allow the truth to come out? It is hiding in plain sight. #ReformUK will stop it.

High prices are self inflicted, but it is not net zero that is the cause. What is your solution to an every increasing world temperature? Do you have any idea of the consequences of failing to deal with it?

I personally do no think net zero obsessed persons are going to learn anything from this explanation. This is about cost. They do not care because it is necessary 'To save the world'. It is an ideology, a religion and for politicians it is about followers, voters

It's now a religion, Mike. The brainwashing runs so deep we'd need a military-grade decontamination centre to awaken the afflicted.

Policy cost are higher in Germany and France.

The last 25 years energy policy has been lunacy

the alternative seeing that we will be importing most of gas in the near future is nuclear but this is twice the cost of renewables and requires govt subsidies other countries with lots of renewables keep the cost down- why can't we?

@GlynMcbride And on the BBC, will he be back on again?

What a complete dummy wanker! Everyone knows that solar, wind and battery as a combination will easily power the grid 24/7 at the cheapest price and it’s available today and will cost half the price in a decade. It takes 5-7 years just to build anything fossil

Spot on . I worked as an accountant for several energy companies and its cost of delivering the energy not the cost of energy production. This chart helps

Guest doesn’t know what he’s talking about: Typical UK grid demand is 20–45 GW, average 29–31 GW. Offshore prices are set based on more expensive gas production (35–40% of energy price). Our grid due to become net exporter of energy on interconnects around 2030.

That deserves a repost Mike Gardner 👌👏👏👍

@BeerAgentSean He never once said that ‘net zero’ was stupid. That was you, misrepresenting what he said. Shameful gaslighting .

@BeerAgentSean That’s the only rational conclusion from what he did say.

@BeerAgentSean No it isn’t. It’s a loaded and completely biased conclusion that you decided to present as an academic saying it. Pathetic.

@Frear3 And eco loons too👏👏👏

I’ve been tweeting expletives at UK politicians for months because of this and more. High tax and high energy costs because they are midwits who do not understand things 🥲👍🏿

@Keir_Starmer get rid of mad Ed

And King!!

@ClimateThere The stupidity of climate change fanaticism is finally becoming obvious to everyone. We cannot change the climate of a planet with taxation, especially when we are the only country trying to do it. Net Zero is a monumental folly.

The impact on industry in the UK of "net zero" is horrendous. But at least our biggest economic powerhouses are service industries. In Germany, a manufacturing country, I fear even more. How can our politicians be so stupid?

Dieter, apparently ignoring the climate crisis - whilst China putting up more renewables than anyone else by a very large margin.
