I don't think JD Vance knows what a blood libel is. He defines it here as the idea that “because of your genetics, because of your blood, because of your ancestry, you are guilty of a crime that you never committed.” That's not what a blood libel is. The classic blood libel was the fabricated accusation that Jews murdered Christian children and used their blood for religious purposes, most famously in connection with Passover. The power of the blood libel wasn't that every single Jew was personally accused of murdering a child. It was the invention of some monstrous secret Jewish crime, repeated until ordinary people came to believe that Jews were capable of it. What Vance is describing is closer to blood guilt or classical racial prejudice. These people are bad because of their ancestry, ethnicity or religion. That's not really what people like Tucker are doing, at least not yet. Tucker doesn't generally tell his audience that Jews are bad because they were born Jewish. He tells them that Jews, “Zionists,” Chabad, Jewish donors or Israel's American supporters are actually doing terrible things. Part of what makes the blood libel so effective is that it comes with its own defense against accusations of antisemitism. "I don't hate Jews because they're Jewish. I hate them because they're murdering Christian children." The modern version works the same way. "I don't hate Jews because they're Jewish. I hate Israel (read Jews) because they deliberately murder innocent Palestinian children." Not because of any rational explanation such as that children tragically die in war, but because Israelis supposedly want to kill them, enjoy killing them or simply don't care. Understanding what a blood libel actually is would help Vance understand why so many Jews are horrified by what Tucker Carlson has been doing. A perfect example is Tucker's claim that Chabad was helping drive America into a religious war with Iran whose end goal was destroying Al Aqsa and rebuilding the Third Temple. The problem with Tucker isn't that he criticizes Israel. It's the endless production of sinister accusations about Jews and the institutions associated with them, followed by millions of people being told that “these people” are secretly screwing them. And fighting this is difficult because you have to do two things at once. Identify the antisemitic mechanism and dismantle the underlying lie. That's even harder in a global information environment where governments, activists and hostile states have their own reasons for pushing false or wildly distorted claims about Israel and inflaming divisions inside America. Vance says the “core of antisemitism” is the blood libel. And he's right. He just doesn't seem to understand what a blood libel is, or recognize the modern version when it's sitting right next to him.
