Today, we remember Richard Bresler, a jiu-jitsu pioneer and our father's first student in California. His legacy extends far beyond his achievements in the art. During one of our hospital visits, Richard shared this story of a chance encounter at Whole Foods with our mother. He explained that after commenting on the Gracie hoodie she was wearing, our mom took the hoodie off and gave it to him without hesitation, a gesture that resonated deeply with him. This heartfelt moment reflected her eternal gratitude for his tireless support of our family. In this spirit, Richard was allowed any merch from GU, any time, at no cost, and we never knew how much that meant to him until this day. We love you Richard. Your sacrifice and support will be cherished and remembered forever.

Marie ran a brothel in Peoria, Illinois, and raised him in a world of violence, survival, and raw human behavior. She was strong, protective, and tough, someone Pryor described as both loving and controlling. She taught him to fight back and never back down. That fearlessness later showed up in his comedy, where nothing was off limits. Pryor’s voice did not come out of nowhere. It was forged by the woman who raised him. Pryor did not just tell jokes. He told the truth about race, pain, family, and life as he had lived it. His comedy was not just talent. It was survival turned into truth.

But he would also tell her when she was a child not to let anyone call her the N-word. "I just knew in my heart there was a difference between the word that he was trying to highlight and the racist word that I was called at school," she told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "But it was hard to figure out." Elizabeth, a professor at Smith College, has spent much of her career studying the origins of the N-word. In her new book, "Something We Said: Richard Pryor, a Notorious Word, and Me," she examines how her father changed comedy and his relationship with the N-word. "He literally told me I had to punch somebody out if they ever call me the N-word," she said.
