In FIFA and IFAB Laws of the Game, deliberate play is when a player has control of the ball and attempts to pass, gain possession, or clear it. *‘Deliberate play’ (excluding deliberate handball) is when a player has control of the ball with the possibility of: •passing the ball to a team-mate; •gaining possession of the ball; or •clearing the ball (e.g. by kicking or heading it) ➡️clearing the ball (e.g. by kicking or heading it) And that’s what Viega did. The way Iowa State guarded Purdue’s ball screen action was fascinating. A built in drop man to stop the pocket pass and a show man to deter the pull up. Basically zoning off and playing 3 on 2 anytime Purdue went into a ball screen forcing someone else to beat them. Wild.
