There’s a narrative out there that the actions against Iran “lack strategy.” I debunk that notion. First of all we have a clear and strategic objective: Iran can never have a nuclear bomb. Then you have to deal with REALITY instead of western ideals of traditional diplomacy. The reality is that this regime is a radical theocracy that thrives on martyrdom and only understands the language of strength. They have a high threshold for pain but it’s not infinite. Our strategy has been simple. Decimate their conventional military capacity so they can no longer protect their nuclear program. We retain the option to continue targeting if they don’t make the deal we want. Second, our blockade has been effective and is drastically reducing the time that Iran has. They don’t have time on their side, but we do. Oil markets are not what they used to be. Iran will have to come to the table on our terms or more pain will be inflicted. Are there short term costs? Yes but they are minimal. People need to have some perspective. Looking back we can only WISH we had taken action against North Korea before they became untouchable. We cannot risk another untouchable rogue terrorist regime. Period. This is not an endless war. It has been just over a month, no boots on the ground. Our gulf allies are emboldened and united. We all understand the need for bold action that ensures long term stability. The alternative is the same failed policy of strongly worded letters and ineffective sanctions that simply keep the problem alive and in need of constant attention. The problem is that one of Iran's most important remaining nuclear facilities is believed to be buried too deep for even America's most powerful conventional bunker-buster bombs to reliably destroy. That has led some analysts to discuss a possibility that until recently would have been almost unthinkable: a U.S. tactical nuclear strike. The greatest danger wouldn't necessarily be Iran's immediate retaliation. It would be breaking an almost 80-year taboo on the use of nuclear weapons. That precedent wouldn't stay in the Middle East. Russia has repeatedly threatened nuclear escalation during the war in Ukraine but has so far stopped short of crossing that line. Part of that restraint comes from the enormous political cost of being the first country since 1945 to use a nuclear weapon in war. This is how the US uses nuclear weapons as an excuse to attack anyone they wish. They attacked Iran over nukes. But stayed silent when the dictatorial regime of North Korea built them, or when the jihadi regime of Pakistan built them. They no longer attack these nations, or any nuclear-armed nation. India remains the only country in the world to strike military bases of a nuclear-armed country during Operation Sindoor.

Two almost opposite views, just a few months apart. Piers told me my reasoning on Iran was wrong because Russia, China and North Korea would not agree that a nuclear armed Iran would be a danger to the world. But not long ago, he was saying that “the rest of the world”, apart from China, Russia and North Korea, does think a nuclear armed Iran would be a danger. So first he argued that those countries do not matter. Then he argued that they do matter. All to decide whether a fanatical theocratic regime, dedicated to annihilating Israel and other forces for good, should be allowed nuclear weapons.

Donald Trump, in response to the question if there is a deal that is acceptable that only covers nuclear: That would be acceptable. But the one thing and right up front, no nuclear weapons. If you could have made the deal two years ago, we would have made the deal. But they weren't willing to do that. Now they are willing to do it. So they're willing to do much more than they would have a year and a half ago or even a year ago when we've heard. Don't forget we've only been doing this for exactly one year. And we've started this with them a few months after the beginning of this term. This term has been amazing. But the results could very, they could surprise people. If they would have offered this deal originally when we first started, it would have been accepted immediately. We'll see what happens now.
