All in the Family was probably the first American TV show that didn't wait for the laughs, so to speak. They played the characters real.

I'm not crying, you're crying

We admit it we are

My goodness... what is this salty discharge? I remember this scene very well. 🥹 This show was amazing. The Sammy Davis episode, one of the best.

I remember Archie and Edith did go to California to visit them in the next and final season (9). Archie was looking out from their balcony or patio and could see other people. He said the economy must be bad in California, look at those poor people having to share a cigarette 😄

Thank you for posting this. "Meathead" and Archie having a moment. Thank you to Norman Lear (RIP) for bringing us 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘐𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺, one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

Bookending this with their first scene...

I may be mistaken but O'Connor also lost his son. This show was hysterical. Sanford and son was funny not like the shows today. Shows a politically correct no more laughter, actors are horrible and the writers.

We did a questionnaire a while back asking if people thought a show like ALL IN THE FAMILY or Sanford and son would work today, or would networks be too spineless. I think you can probably guess the answer.

@DebraRossi20 You know, people say that, but South Park and Family Guy are WAY crazier than anything this show ever produced. Maybe folks consider that, as cartoons, they get an 'out' but I stand by my assertion: shows like this AITF COULD succeed if they're done with the right talent.

@DebraRossi20 But those are cartoons, cartoons are accepted, live actors playing it real, that's something else.

@DebraRossi20 But a core question is: why? Cartoons seem easy to accept as satire, why not human? There have been some recent ones (“Jojo Rabbit” comes to mind)

@DebraRossi20 I guess they feel it's more palatable if they are cartoons doing it. We don't understand it either!

So true. Also the one where Mike & Archie are stuck in the cellar of the bar & Archie reveals his relationship w his own dad. Mike finally understands him. Very touching. God speed Rob & Michelle.

"I don't like an ocean where the sun goes down, I like an ocean where the sun comes up" 😆

Ah Jeez.....you made my readers fog.

As a parent, I can't fathom what happened. This side of eternity I'm not sure if the family will ever find true peace, but may they at least have a modicum of justice. Thank G-d Carl was not alive for this...

That was actually the final scene of Rob as a regular cast member. Mike and Gloria returned several times later and had more scenes with Archie.

I say this in a kind way: Rob was always "the Meathead" to me! He was part of a fantastic cast on this show. I've thought about the 'sock, sock, shoe, shoe' scene many a time over the years as I'm putting on my socks & shoes. RIP to Rob & his wife.

Ah jeez will you look at youse here making me getting all emotionalistic.

This is how I will remember him. 🙏🏻

I watched this show with my parents. 😥

Awww, I'm not crying, 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 crying.

Actually we are

I cried like the first time I saw this. My family watched All In The Family regularly when it first came on.

How tragic. No one should die like he and his wife did. It's the ultimate betrayal when it's one of your children. Allow me to add, what a superb actor was Carroll O'Connor.

This was the episode where Gloria, Mike & little Joey were moving to California. Every single actor was emotional & teary eyed during this scene. Including the viewers. Godspeed Rob & Michele Reiner.🙏🏽

RIP Meathead. Damn, All In The Family is such a big part of my core memories growing up. Groundbreaking on so many levels

To hold his own with O' Connor, maybe the greatest ever TV actor, is pretty impressive.

Big deal back in the day. I had one.

They did reunite after that when Archie/edith go to California for Christmas.

How dont I remember that?

I think it was the second to last or last season

I looked it up. Its the final episode. 🫡

@horrormuseum It’s the final episode of Season 8, there was still a full season to go. And Archie and Edith did go to California in Season 9 so there were more scenes with Mike and Archie. The above clip is the final scene between Mike and Archie at 704 Hauser St. 🙂

@horrormuseum Well how about that? I thought 8 was the end. Looks like I got some homework.

@geoffd307 @horrormuseum Mike and Archie’s emotional farewell where they share a touching, long-overdue moment of peace and understanding. Episode Title: "The Stivics Go West". Season/Episode Number: Season 8, Episode 24 (Series 181). Air Date: March 19, 1978. For some context, I would’ve just turned 8

@geoffd307 @horrormuseum I was 10. Probably why I don't remember it.

It wasn’t the final scene. Rob Reiner (and Sally Struthers) came back the next season on All in the Family for a special Christmas episode and the year after for a special Thanksgiving episode on Archie Bunkers Place.

This scene always gutted me. Two phenomenal actors.

This helps - thank you. Very hard to process how violently his life (and his wife’s) ended. 😔💔

I remember watching this with my mother. Damn.

During The Oscar’s Memorial segment everybody better be standing on their feet applauding the living daylights for this guy. Everybody…

Such an intelligent, incisive and witty show. Perfect for it's time. Nowadays, it wouldn't make it to air.

Oh god I am crying.

All in the Family was a favorite in our house growing up. They sure don't make shows like that anymore.

@SCRIBEMOON What an actor O’Connor was!

@robneyer Carroll O’Connor was unbelievably good in that role. One of the greatest ever
