Superman doesn't close the rift, Terrific does - and if Terrific died or for some other reason couldn't help, Superman doesn't know how to do it. So, either Terrific or Lex and the geek squad have to close it. And the Jahanpurians are rescued by The Justice Gang. Superman has no material impact on the outcome of the two climaxes of the film at all.

This is the kind of Superman that I've been waiting for all these years. The one who is not a depressing God, but a human with feelings like us. He bleeds, he cries, he feels pain, he smiles, he saves lives and never gives up. He also has a normal life surrounded by a family.
