This week, Christopher Rufo tackle the Indian Question. Among other things, this episode cuts to the heart of longstanding foundational political disputes that are simply unreconcilable, but which can longer be brushed aside. Namely that some people (perhaps most people) prefer to live in a homogenous society, and as...

@christopherrufo But you’re not the majority. Most Americans are fine with legal Indian immigration. You’re trying to impose a minority preference on everyone else.

@christopherrufo South Asians not relevant to demographic change: Grouping all, they will go from ~2% to ~2.5% of the US pop over the next 20 years Latinos will go from 20% of the US pop to ~25%, which is what will turn the US from a majority White (56% now) to minority White (49%) country.

All true and we cover this in the first part of the episode. Nonetheless, Indians have become the face for this larger set of concerns owing to a lot of ways in quich Indians, while small in number (and relatively quick to assimilate), are uniquely conspicuous among recent immigrant groups

@christopherrufo Yes. Much easier to see someone is Indian vs, say, Jewish. Ultimately, do ofc agree with @bofrench that mass immigration has gone too far. Worried that what's gonna happen is that Whites now "lib out" bc they're asked to embrace ugliness.

@christopherrufo Every approved petition for years is public. Any idiot can file an LCA for a cashier (or *any* job). That LCA will not lead to a visa.

@christopherrufo As I put to @christopherrufo : "People getting into over the top rhetoric about Indians making themselves look like cranks..." Ultimately, we've just seen this play out so many times, it's pretty easy to guess how the next decade will go like the last

@christopherrufo First of all, the words of Enoch Powell are, as always, definitive: “Numbers are of the essence.”

@christopherrufo Solid points. Wish more people understood when we say we want immigrants to have high income, low crime, that just means we want that to be the bar for consideration, not the golden ticket auto admission.

Post-WW2 America, after the 1920's immigration halt and a couple generations of top-down-reinforced assimilation, had something close to ideal: An anglo-culture white-majority high-trust society that still got the "good" effects of immigration like ethnic food. I grew up in the last decades of that, and I miss it.

@christopherrufo Fascinating discussion! Two items for further exploration: to what extent do South Asians “benefit” from DEI in ways East Asians do not and why, and what issues arise from that; and comparing Indian Hindu v Sikh v Muslim immigration.

@christopherrufo If you don't live in a North TX suburb, you simply have no idea how bad it is. There have been entire weekends where I haven't seen a single white person. Just do a layover at DFW Airport and you'll quickly understand. I don't believe the 2% figure at all.

@christopherrufo Stated preferences are often different than revealed preferences. Those who claim to prefer diversity are almost always an outgroup. When they become an ingroup, their revealed preference is almost always homogeneity, illustrating the stated preference was a tactic.

@christopherrufo "Homogenous" as in *racially* homogenous? This is just straight-up racism, right? I think you're badly overestimating how common this view is outside of twitter.

@christopherrufo Here are my observations from the episode. Although I sympathize with much of Lomez pov, my conclusion for RW Indians is to form a space in the modern Democratic Party and push rapidly for Green Card reform for backlogged Indians only.

WATCH] On behalf of the African National Congress, I want to state that we a country of over 60 million. There are many people who come to our country and many come to our country to contribute to the wealth of our country and its progress. Many contribute positively in our country. There are people in our country who have taken it upon themselves to do things which the vast majority do not condone and this must not paint South Africans as xenophobic. Indeed we do have a challenge of illegal immigration in South Africa and it’s not a problem unique to South Africa. There are many country’s affected by this. South Africa is a signatory of the Geneva Convention and we must deal with this challenge within the perimeters of the law. We can’t deal with it with hatred. That is why government has adopted a program of action to deal with this particular challenge which the President has made a public announcement. We have called for law enforcement and calmness and follow the government’s Action Plan on dealing with illegal immigration. We have made it very clear as the ANC, we cannot and should not be associated with anything that amounts to hate crimes. In this particular instance the majority of South Africans are people of Ubuntu and humanity. Because we too would not be free without the solidarity and assistance of country’s such as Mozambique in the fight against apartheid. Many people sacrificed such as Samora Machel the President of Mozambique and many combatants died here fighting against apartheid. #ANCinMozambique #ANCatWORK

Friedberg’s Ideal Immigration Test: Worker or Welfare? (Or Makers vs Takers) “I'm all about discerning immigration, not on the lines of some cultural definition, but really around that simple framing of are you going to get social support services or are you going to work? Going back to my makers vs takers point, if the primary motivation for an individual to come to this country is to be given benefits, to be given payments, to be given social services, to be given support, I think that that person should be denied immigration. If the primary motivation for the individual to come to the United States is to work to progress themselves, to become a maker, to create things, to work in such a way that they can generate income, save capital, buy things, advance their family's position because they are denied those rights due to the tyranny of the place that they're coming from, then they should be granted immigration status to come to this country and contribute. Because at the end of the day, what people may not like to hear, which is the truth, is that every single one of those people is actually net positive in growing our economy. And everyone thinks it's a zero-sum game with respect to jobs in the United States, and we shouldn't let people into this country that create jobs. But the fundamental truth is that anyone that is productive, meaning they create more value than they take in, grows the economy and more jobs get created, and overall, we all benefit from having those individuals here in this country. And by the way, if you are going to work, you are going to culturally assimilate, because that is what the United States is based on, which is productivity, work hard, create things, and have individual agency, have the ability to progress yourself in this world, in this society. And if you take advantage of that opportunity, you're going to love the American ideals that this country was founded upon.”
