Interesting that Mearsheimer, a longtime proponent of containing China (and, IMHO, very wrong about this), believes we're now well past the point of no return. He says that "the US cannot do much at this point to slow down Chinese economic growth" and that he "would bet that the Chinese will overcome the American effort to damage the Chinese economy more than the American economy is damaged as a result of these sanctions and tariffs", meaning that the US now hurts itself more by trying to contain China than it hurts China.

The world is at a new crossroads: Can China and the US overcome the Thucydides Trap and create a new paradigm to meet global challenges together.” The Thucydides Trap is the structural tension that occurs when a rapidly rising power (China) threatens to displace an established ruling power that is in decline (US).
