Federal prosecutors on Friday asked a judge to dismiss an indictment charging former U.S. Olympic canoeist David Hearn with ripping up the bottom of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, citing new information that the damage was caused by a "botched installation" by a contractor, not vandalism. The U.S. Attorney's Office in D.C. had charged Hearn with felony destruction of government property, accusing him of causing more than $1,000 in damage to the sealant that was recently installed at the bottom of the Reflecting Pool. The project to renovate the pool was championed by President Trump. CBS News' Olivia Rinaldi has more.

Analysis from WAPO on what caused the peeling of the Reflecting Pool: We surveyed the pool in the end of June and we located the seven moments of coating failure that you see highlighted here. We then compared that with satellite imagery as well as photos and videos that were taken during the construction process. This helped us identify that all seven of these locations take place along seams that are forged during the meeting of two rectangular coating sections that are put down, one after the other. We brought this information to four experts in waterproof coating, who told us that while no precise diagnosis can be made without being on site or with lab testing, that it is strongly indicative of an application failure made during the construction process.

Days earlier, his own Justice Department dropped the case against the guy they'd charged for it, admitting in a filing that the damage was "botched" contractor installation, not vandalism. When they drained the pool to fix it, there were no cut marks. There were tire tracks, from Trump's own motorcade driving through it. This is the same $14 million pool that was "impervious to knives" in May and got "sliced 350 feet" by June. The DOJ already told the story straight. The president's still telling the other one. "We drained the beautiful 'Reflecting Pool' today in order to fix the scars and damage that was done by the Vandals two weeks ago," Trump wrote on Truth Social late Monday.
