Following a series of meetings today between Israeli Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, and Deputy Chief of General Staff, Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadai, with top and lower-level officers in the Israel Defense Force; Zamir has announced the mass dismissal and censure of over a dozen senior officers and other military officials over their failures in the lead up to October 7, 2023. These include: - Former Chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva, who resigned in August 2024, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Former Chief of the Operations Directorate, Maj. Gen. Oded Basiuk, who ended his tenure in July, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Former Commander of the IDF Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yaron Finkelman, who resigned in March, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Current Chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate, Maj. Gen. Shlomo Binder, who served as Chief of the Operations Division on October 7, was censured but he will continue to serve in the role until the end of his four-year tenure - in 2028 - after which he will resign from the Israel Defense Force. - Current Head of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, will be censured over the force’s failure to defend against the intrusion of drones and para-gliders operated by Hamas on October 7. He will continue to serve in the role until the end of his tenure in April 2026. - Commander-in-Chief of the Israeli Navy, Vice Adm. David Sa'ar Salama, will be censured over the force’s failure to defend against the sea-borne attack by Hamas operatives against Southern Israel on October 7. He will continue to serve in the role until the end of his tenure at the start of 2026. - Brig. Gen. “Gimmel,” who headed the Military Intelligence Directorate's Operational Operations Division on October 7, will be discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Former Commander of Unit 8200 in the Israeli Intelligence Corps, Brig. Gen. Yossi Sariel, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Former Commander of the 143rd Division (Gaza Division), Brig. Gen. Avi Rosenfeld, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Former Intelligence Chief of the IDF Southern Command, Col. Ariel Lubovski, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Col. Haim Cohen, the Commander of the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade during October 7, will be dismissed from reserve duty and discharged from the Israel Defense Force. - Lt. Col. “Alef,” the Intelligence Chief of the Gaza Division, will be discharged from the Israel Defense Force. Additionally, Zamir has ruled that there is no issue with promoting Brig. Gen. Eliad Moati, Brig. Gen. Manor Yanai and Col. Ephraim Avni, after Defense Minister Israel Katz decided to hold up their planned appointments due to claims that they had supposed involvement in the failures on October 7.
