Joy Milne’s unique ability to smell Parkinson’s disease is attributed to a rare condition known as hyperosmia, which gives her a heightened sense of smell. This extraordinary talent has not only been instrumental in the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease but has also opened up new avenues for scientific research. Her observations led scientists to believe that the scent may be caused by a chemical change in skin oil, known as sebum, that is triggered by the disease. Building on Joy’s observations, Professor Perdita Barran and her team at the University of Manchester developed a test that can identify people with Parkinson’s disease using a simple cotton bud run along the back of the neck. The researchers examine the sample to identify molecules linked to the disease to help diagnose if someone has it. This breakthrough could potentially lead to faster and more accurate diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, which currently relies on a patient’s symptoms and medical history. Joy’s ability to smell Parkinson’s disease has also led to the establishment of a company, Sebomix Ltd., in 2021. The company aims to exploit sebum as a diagnostic biofluid with a focus on Parkinson’s Disease.

the most disturbing part is "scientists didn't believe her" you have to wonder how many "crazy" people get dismissed by the status quo who may have ended up being right about what would've been scientific breakthroughs.

I’ve read about this last before, a lot of professionals were skeptical but realized it can be possible because service dogs notice conditions the same way. I wonder what it smells like
