Today in the Ethics Committee, Conservative MP Aaron Gunn -Aaron Gunn called out the Liberals’ $1.45 billion BC condo developer bailout for exactly what it is. He ripped into the generational inequity of taking tax dollars from young people still trying to enter the housing market and handing huge sums to developers who have already made billions. He pointed out that this creates no new housing. It simply rewards the people who built overpriced condos that normal families cannot afford. Gunn said it is bad economic policy. Unethical. Immoral. Wrong. He is correct. This is not about helping young Canadians get homes. It is about protecting the connected developers and their political friends. Just called out the NDP condo bailout on the Mike Smyth Show -Mike Smyth. This is what happens when government taxes and regulates an industry into crisis then rides in with a bailout. 35 to 45 percent of the cost of a new home in BC is government. Taxes, regulations, restrictions and endless delays drive up prices and make housing unaffordable. This NDP government mandated all this building while creating the very conditions that killed demand. Over 70,000 people have fled British Columbia because they cannot afford to live here, get married or raise a family. Jobs are leaving. Investment is drying up. Now with thousands of empty condos sitting unsold, Carney and Eby want taxpayers to bail out the developers at full price? Then they will have to subsidize them even more so people can actually live in them? Forestry workers, waitresses and young families who are already struggling to put food on the table never shared in the developers profits. But now they are supposed to subsidize their losses? That is absolute nonsense. This is business. Developers took the risk when times were good and made their money. If the units are too expensive, they need to lower the prices until British Columbians can afford them. Government should not be the backstop for private investment. That is not how our economy should work. It is a socialist approach that punishes working people while protecting insiders. We need to slash the taxes and cut the red tape that made this mess in the first place. Common sense over ideology. British Columbians deserve better.

Housing is a human right. No one in this city should have to worry about losing their home or end up on the streets due to systemic issues. Homelessness and the housing crisis are not two different problems, they are two sides of the same coin. And they have the same solution – permanent affordable housing. Trickle down economics is a fallacy. The market cannot provide affordable housing. Prices are only going up, driving people into homelessness, or out of the city entirely. Australia’s housing obsession is one of its greatest weaknesses. Rising house prices are not a sign of prosperity. What they actually tell you is that more money is being borrowed from the banking sector to buy homes. The cause of rising house prices is rising household debt, and that is unproductive. House prices are now five times more expensive than consumer goods compared to 1970. We should never have allowed that to happen. Housing should not be an asset. It is not something you should profit out of. It is something you should live in. The people who really benefit from rising house prices are real estate agents and property developers, not the families who live in them. We are paupers living inside castles. Paying a fortune on the mortgage, a fortune on private schools, and out of the remainder, just trying to live. And I can almost guarantee that 100% of the people who voted for me, and at least 95% of all residents across Pickering and Durham, do not want higher taxes. People are already struggling. Seniors are trying to stay in the homes they worked their entire lives to pay off. Families are choosing between food and fuel. And when concerns were raised about seniors being pushed out of their homes by rising taxes, the Mayor’s response was for them to take out a reverse mortgage — to borrow against their homes just to survive government-imposed costs. That is not compassion. That is not fiscal responsibility. That is your government telling seniors to liquidate their dignity instead of changing priorities. Being elected does not give you a mandate to ignore hardship. It gives you a duty to protect the people — not push them further into debt. I will not support higher taxes while residents are already in survival mode.
