Thomas Sowell often challenged simplified narratives about the history of slavery. He emphasized that slavery existed across many societies and periods of history, with different groups participating in and profiting from the institution. Thomas Sowell often reminds people that history is far more complicated than the simplified stories we’re sometimes taught. Slavery was not unique to the West. It existed across different regions and civilizations throughout history. Understanding that doesn’t excuse the Atlantic slave trade, it puts it into a broader historical context and shows why history should be studied honestly, rather than reduced to a simple good-versus-evil narrative.

I know too much history and have too much love for Black Americans to regulate our entire story to slavery. We are bigger than slavery. Slavery is a institution created by white identifying immigrant men. They call it prison today. There are more Black Americans in prison today than were in slavery. Slavery is not the story of all Black Americans. There were more of us fighting back than enslaved. There’s a war called the Gullah Geechee war that lasted over 100 years that they try and erase from history because that War was the beginning of the end of our autonomy. That war helps tie up and expose some of these lies they teach our kids every day.

Lex Fridman: “Only 4% of slaves in the Atlantic slave trade went to the United States.” “Slavery was ubiquitous.” “It existed in virtually every major civilization in human history.” “Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, the Islamic world, Africa, and the pre-Columbian Americas all practiced slavery.” “The story of human slavery reaches deep into our history and is geographically much larger than the United States.” Lex Fridman

Keith Boykin: “There’s a whole history of racism in the Republican Party.” Ben Ferguson: “You guys had slavery. We were against it. The Democratic Party was literally the party of slavery. So let’s not act like there’s a history. If you want to talk about history, slavery is the Democratic Party. Be honest and own it.” Keith Boykin: “Why don't we just listen to you, Ben? Tell us about black history.” Ben Ferguson: “On that one, every American should be able to tell you about. You don‘t have to be black to say that the Democratic Party was in favor of slavery, the party of slavery.” Keith Boykin: “Ben, Ben, you don't know what you're talking about. Let me just say this —” Ben Ferguson: “It wasn't the Republican Party. History is there.”

Thomas Sowell: “Slavery was not confined by race. It was not defined or created by race. It existed for thousands of years. A history professor once had a student come up to him and ask, ‘When did slavery begin?’ The real question is: when did freedom begin? Slavery existed as long as we have records. From archaeological findings, we know that people were enslaving other people before they could read or write. It has always existed and has existed all over the world. The number of White people enslaved by pirates in North Africa was greater than the number of Africans brought to the United States. And yet, that’s not even mentioned.”

It’s interesting that there are so many documentaries about the history of the Arab-Islamic slave trade, yet hardly anyone knows about it. Here are some books if you’re interested: • Ronald Segal - Islam’s Black Slaves • Murray Gordon - Slavery in the Arab World • Bernard Lewis - Middle Eastern Slavery History

White populations endured more brutal and prolonged slavery than other groups, were the first to abolish it, yet are disproportionately blamed for the institution of slavery worldwide. Why do you think that is?? 🤔

AMERICANS TAUGHT DISTORTED HISTORY OF SLAVERY Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, it remains a stubborn myth that the North of the US was not involved in slavery. The prevailing narrative is that slavery was only deeply entrenched in the societal fabric of the South. In this clip, speaking in support of H.R. 40, a bill proposing a commission to study reparations for slavery, filmmaker Katrina Browne, a Philadelphia native, explains how the North was complicit in slavery. Along with nine relatives, Browne retraced her own family journey, discovering that they were the largest slave-trading family in US history - transporting over 12,000 Africans to the Americas in chains. She recounts that learning the history of her Rhode-Island ancestors led to the realisation that the only reason most Americans are ignorant of the North’s slave history is because Americans are taught a distorted version of history. Browne spotlights facts that contradict the idea that the North had little involvement, including the fact that Rhode Island, where her family roots lie, sent more ships to Africa in the European slave trade than any other state in the slave business, which spanned across centuries. A wide array of industries in the North profited as a result - from shipping to finance - meaning that slavery was largely responsible for the economic rise of the US as a whole. Browne ended by stating that an understanding of true history should come with acceptance of the realities of what Black people were subjected to at the hands of White enslavers. She said that what Black people want is true understanding and repair, which must encompass meaningful solutions such as reparations to rectify the injustices, not revenge. Video Credit:

Thomas Sowell: ”Slavery was much bigger and involved infinitely more people than people have realized. It was not confined by race. It was not defined or created by race. Cause slavery existed as long as we have any records. From archaeological findings, we know that people were enslaving other people before they could read or write.
