Thoughts on Martin Kabrhel

I have been at the table and have had no issues with Martin because I returned to him what he is dishing. If you are one of the world’s best, you gotta be able to handle the variance, the long days, the bad breath and body odor of others, the person who refuses to make the dealer’s life easier and push their chips in, the girl who talks, the guy who talks, the guy who never posts his blind because he has headphones on, the dealer who annoys you, the feeezing cold rooms, the hot spaces…. you gotta be able to handle all of it while putting your brain to calculating odds/stack size ratios/manipulate tells ETC You gotta do it all. And you gotta be able to handle Martin. If Martin says “can i ask you a question?” you can handle it passively (ignore), direct ( say no or yes) or offensively (has your wife had to go to couples therapy to handle your incessant chatter? etc) Poker is this bubble where people feel entitled to perfect conditions. I feel like those aren’t any guarantees we should expect as competitors

Good take. On the people not talking back to him couple thoughts: Decent amount of people do actually I have myself as well and he pretty much always you can’t take it. That said the average poker player is probably too introverted to do so so it’s only a minority who do it. But the other part of that is for those of us who to talk back to him you need to realize this guy is a machine. He can literally talk the entire 10 hour day. I don’t know a lot of people who can do that other than Negranu.

Great thoughts. Many of us grew up watching @WSOP on ESPN in the early 2000s and there were more “entertaining” characters. The game felt more dangerous-which created conflict for the audience. Now, we all recognized that keeping emotion at bay is a vital part of the game.

I mean do you really believe they think he’s a fish? He’s just a really good player.. don’t really think it’s up for debate. Doesn’t have to be “top 5” in the world or something. But he’s obviously a winning player. Tournament variance is beyond understated.

I'm guessing you've never played at a table with Martin. I have several times, including a final table. Other players do talk back, but that doesn't make the recordings because Martin talks nonstop. Trying to match his vocal energy is exhausting and takes away your focus.

kabrhel is borderline unwatchable. contemplated turning off MDG multiple times, but importantly from a production standpoint, i never did. it's possible to provide good content w/o being this annoying. eric persson did it much better than martin.

It’s not optimal to engage with him because of : required energy while he has bottomless, it will not entertain you but it will entertain him, he has mastered giving nearly nothing away while you will. If you wish to say something pick a single repeatable phrase to tilt him

Will , most of use who watch poker as a sports viewer grew up on Dnegs, Hellmuth, Matusow and so many big personalities. It mixed a great game/sport with conflict and personality. New era ruined that. So yes we love Martin.

No one confronts him because he'll just crank up the annoying factor even higher. From a sportsmanship perspective his rooting for Foxen to lose when he wasn't even in the hand was incredibly poor sportsmanship that should be punished. I'd have come over the fuckin' table at him.

Watching him punt another 1.7 million in this last big game I doubt high rollers don't want him playing even with all the antics.
