That is one warped head. Needs to be replaced.

😯

Gona need a thicker Head Gasket.....

👍

That head must have reached the temperature of the sun to be that warped.

Yep!

The cylinder block is not positioned in a proper angle. The trim is slightly one sided. The machine is eating more on one side than the other. Definitely cooked, it is not going to last.

😯

It’s like watching a Van Gogh being painted…

🤤

If it had to be cut that much, best to toss it away and get a new one.

😯

Is it just me or does anyone else see it?

Awijaah

That's an overhead cam head. Even when cut true, the cam bearings are not in line bc of warpage.

👍

@Arnoldsdesign Depends, you can compensate by an oversized gasket or 2 gaskets. Need more info. You have taken a bit off the head. The manufacturer would give you tolerance & recommendations to compensate for compression & timing chains.

@metroTM33 I once fly cut a toyota 22R head. I had to remove .080" which is unreal. Needless to say, it was junk after that. It would've bent the camshaft into a boomerang.

@metroTM33 Yeah, well that engine is what Toyota originally built their global reputation on. Thats almost 3/16”. You could have used 2 head gaskets & it may have worked.

@metroTM33 The head gaskets may be true, but the line between the cam bearings was warped .080". It had to physically bend the cam shaft into a curve.

@DarylTh25458056 👌🏼

After the first pass I would have most likely junked it, that's pretty bad.

Yep!

As the engine head moves from right to left, we see the trailing edge of the cutting head removing material. Wouldn't this material already have been removed by the *leading* edge of the cutting head? If the spindle is perpendicular to the milling-machine bed, all cutting should take place at the leading edge of the cutting head. The trailing edge of the cutter head should only pass over the workpiece without cutting.

😙

everybody chill- that was only 5/1000th of an inch ... pretty much normal for an aluminum head with a few miles on it

👍

That much material gone? Respect the patience but bro might need a fresh head after this 😂 Still clean work though.

Cooked

Going to bump the compression up a bit

Todo ventajas 🤣

HP gratis con tu reparación" 👍

Oh no

I think you're better off with a whole new block, being that warped... having to remove a lot of material!!!

If they went .001" each pass thats .007" of the head gone now reducing the volume of the upper chamber. Unfortunately you can't shim it back up with this being a cyl head since that head gasket needs a solid seal. I wonder if that head got too hot and very slightly warped itself.

👌🏼

Should up the compression, but that’s a lot of material removed. Valve clearance may be an issue. Not to mention that the block may need surfaced too.

"Milling" the cylinder heads in order to increase the compression ration can be a good idea, so long as a couple of key considerations are kept in mind: 1) allow for proper valve clearance between their full extent, and the piston at its high mark. Custon pistons which have increased valve clearances are available to circumvent this issue. 2) more critically, however, is just how much pressure can be maintained before an explosion occurs, keeping in mind that structural integity is being decreased, while compression is being increased, beyond the cylinder head's original design safety factor.

😙

Any guesses on the cut depth of each pass?

😬

I would be very disappointed if that head went back in my car, just saying.

Dont worry, It Will be the bottom of a table

Surfaoe the block as well!!!

👍

That head appears to have been overheated pretty bad. I wouldn’t trust it.

👌🏼

Seven passes... that head was really warped, I wonder if it was worth rectifying at all.

Nice job. Bigger question is why that engine overheated that much to cause such a warped head.

Seems like new again

But the engine ? It got really really hot, so I'd expect damage on cilinders / piston / piston rings etc.

Hot like hell, the Bonet fire

It's à 16v so probably a GTI / turbo powered engine. Do you know what car it came from ?

No

Cooked, flycutting what looks like a 'k series' rover cylinder head

How many thousandth are being cut per pass?

Tacos

Someone got that properly hot! The other side will need lots of attention too or the cams will fuck out quickly .

🤣👌🏼

No problem, aint nothin an extra quarter inch thick head gasket cant fix...

As a factory rep for a lot of years, I authorized a ton of these but never saw it done until now. Of course 40 years ago it was different I assume. Thanks

Mejor tolerancia en coches antiguos. Hoy todo va a la décima.

@wgbates a tenth in machining terms is .0001 which would be a crazy high tolerance.

@metroTM33 Copy that.

@TendieRanch 👌🏼

damn, that head was pretty warped! I'm guessing it's still within salvageable tolerances even after all that cuttiing!

Hope yes

The camshaft journals will not be in a straight line.

Ups

Well that wasn’t very warped was it, it’ll be fine, compression ratio is upto 25:1……. Sooooo, conversion to diesel??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My thought is that head was warped af.

👌🏼

that oughta bump the compression
