Thoughts? Reckon this VAR intervention in Spain will split opinion.

Watched it several times and can’t even be 100% sure the defender didn’t just trip himself. So how it can be overturned as clear and obvious is beyond me. The bar for clear and obvious is on the floor. Might as well take the refs off the pitch, pointless.

Clipped his leg into the other and ultimately that's why the defender fell over. Definite foul.

The defender ran across the attacker's path and got his legs clipped. There was nowhere else for the attacker to put his feet but it wouldn't have happened but for the defender's action. Should be a goal.

Correct decision made by VAR, clear foul, if it was the other way round it’s 100% a penalty. Not sure why this one is splitting any opinions 😂

I prefer to judge things at full speed - like VAR should (but doesn’t) - and at full speed that’s definitely a goal.

I hate VAR. It’s a goal prevention system. “How can we disallow this goal”. The referees are getting weaker as they don’t have to make a decision, and forget the use of clear and obvious because that went out of the window ages ago.

Never a foul. Defender instigates contact by running directly in the path of the attacker with no attempt to play the ball. If these were given as fouls then defenders would just stand in the way of any player running with the ball! 🤷♂️

Why should it split opinion. He clearly hits his leg as he's trying to pass him, which means the defenders own legs collide and he trips over, leaving the striker clean through. This is where VAR works perfectly, because in real-time that detail might be missed by the Ref.

Dead easy decision , no foul, defender tripped himself up to make it look like a foul and VAR fell for it again as per.

A coming together and a foul is 2 different things. Football is a contact sport. This is a coming together never a foul in a million years. Only has eyes for the goal no intention of playing for a foul. Anything else and your the problem not VAR.

Not a foul. For a trip it would need to be careless - Ben’s running at pace and can’t just immediately stop, so contact is accidental. You could argue it’s the defender impeding the striker because he steps into Ben’s path with the ball no longer within playing distance.

Never a foul. If it’s a foul it’s nonsense, why can a player decide the cross the path of another player in possession of the ball, to deliberately and hopefully initiate contact. That’s MY opinion

Only have to look at the opinions on here to understand why VAR should NOT be used for decisions of OPINION. Let the referee, referee & accept that not everyone will agree with the on field decision. It’s exactly what the NFL do. They tried Instant Replay on OPINION & scrapped it

Just because there is a contact doesn't mean its a foul. Attacker clearly sees the run to get to the ball, whats he meant to do? Defender on the back foot and messes it up. Goal for me

The split opinions are proof of it not being a clear and obvious mistake, so it’s absolutely certain that VAR should not have intervened.

What is the point of football now. VAR sucks the soul out of it. Get rid

Not a clear and obvious error to have missed the lightest of touches. Goal stands

May as well make football a none contact sport if this is the sort of shit we’re deeming as a foul. Where’s the attacker meant to put his feet? The defenders ran directly into his path and forced contact, goal should stand.

Before VAR that was NEVER a foul. That’s a coming together. You NEVER saw these given at ANY time prior to the introduction of VAR yet we’ve had replay technology for years. You only have to look at the Keeper to realise his teams been beaten. Pathetic

I hate VAR. Worst thing that has happened to the game imo

You've captured the problem officials are facing in one tweet, good job @DaleJohnsonESPN 😅 There's never going to be 100% agreement - how do we get to a 'Umpires Call' type decision where it's a grey area, so we let the ref decide with zero interference?

UEFA want our strikers to all be twinks like messi, not allowed to be a physical CF anymore

That was not clear and obvious and the goal should have stood.

@AlexH_29

The beautiful game is dead ☠️

That’s bollocks I’m done with football

Sums var up. Squeezing the joy out of the game.

The defender fails to stop the striker then gets rewarded for falling over

Horrible decision the game is gone, so many goals disallowed for standard contact, pre VAR your luck was in if you scored a goal like this and was part of our beautiful game, fast forward 2 years from now I worry what we will be watching!

I wouldn’t trust anyone that thinks this goal was rightly ruled out

Correct decision. The forward clearly made contact with the defenders leg from behind, causing him to trip. It only takes minimal contact to knock one leg onto the other when runnnig and cause that.

No spliting opinions here it’s just a foul!..😅

That’s harsh, but it does look like he catches him, albeit unintentionally.

No foul leaves leg behind so contact probs no b happy either way tho flip of coin what way it goes

It's a contact sport. It's a coming together. It's not bloody basketball
