The tradition dates back to 1724, when Peter the Great transferred Alexander Nevsky’s relics from Vladimir to his new capital, establishing the medieval warrior-prince as one of St. Petersburg’s heavenly protectors. The annual citywide procession itself was established by Empress Elizabeth in 1743. At its head today are the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and relics of Saint Dmitry Donskoy, bringing together two of the most important warrior-princes in Russian history: Alexander Nevsky, victor over the Swedes at the Neva in 1240, and Dmitry Donskoy, victor at Kulikovo in 1380.

#WATCH | Tamil Nadu | Thousands of Christian devotees participated in the grand annual feast chariot procession of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Melapudur, Tiruchirappalli tonight. The annual feast of the renowned St. Mary’s Cathedral began with the ceremonial flag hoisting on August 30. As part of the celebrations, daily sermons, novena Holy Masses and Eucharistic blessing ceremonies were conducted. On the tenth day of the feast, the grand chariot procession was held. Ahead of the procession, a special musical Holy Mass was conducted under the leadership of parish priest Fr. Savariraj and Rev. Fr. Anton. Later, the three elaborately decorated chariots, illuminated with electric lights and adorned with colourful flowers, carried statues of St. Mary, the guardian angel, and St. Joseph. Trichy Diocese Bishop Arokiyaraj blessed and sanctified the chariots before flagging off the procession. A large number of Christian devotees participated in the procession, singing hymns as the chariots proceeded through several streets from the cathedral before returning to the church premises. The annual chariot procession at St. Mary’s Cathedral witnessed the participation not only of Christians but also thousands of people from other faiths, highlighting the spirit of religious harmony in Tiruchirappalli.
