It’s documented in history books and by scholars that Beethoven was a Moor; Blacks were called Moors in Europe. Moor is short for Moreno, which means black. In the 18th century, Europeans used the term "Moor" to refer to people with darker complexions. Prince Nicholas Esterhazy referred to both Beethoven and Haydn as "Moors"

Beethoven did something unique in this piano sonata. He created a theme for his sonata movement - and then used it for a fugue, which replaced the development section of the standard classical era form. It sounds a lot like Bach, it’s brilliant and beautiful - I want you to hear.

When I was still a student at the conservatory, my professors used to call me ‘Beethoven Girl’. Not just because I was the best Beethoven player they had, you see I had an unhealthy obsession with trying to get these notes to resonate at Beethoven’s truest intent. I read what he read. I ate what he ate. I engulfed myself in Voltaire and Kant to breathe the same air of Enlightenment he breathed. To experience the frequencies he could not hear but were realer to him than his own reality. I learned from his students directly — Wilhelm Kempff and John O’Conor. When I realized every piece of sheet music was altered by production for copyright purposes, I flew to Europe to get my hands on the First Edition of Beethoven Sonatas from Budapest. I hand painted this specific third movement on the walls of my dorm. I graduated the conservatory with this as my final performance and went on to use it for my audition piece to get accepted as a fine arts major in university. The piece in its entirety is 1 hour long. Here is Beethoven’s Sonata No 17 in D minor, the third movement—Tempest—performed to the enlightenment with which he originally intended. Yours truly, Beethoven Girl

Saturday night music offering. This is Beethoven’s piano trio (piano, violin, cello) op. 1 no. 3. I like this piece because it’s one of the first works Beethoven published, and blows up the idea that he had fixed ‘periods’ of composing. Usually people talk of an early imitative period, a middle ‘heroic period’ with works like Eroica and Symphony 5, and then a ‘late period.’ This work is an ‘early’ work that sounds like it came 10 years later in the heroic period. In other words - Beethoven was experimenting. Haydn actually thought this work was too advanced for the Viennese audience, and recommended against promoting it. But it’s quintessential Beethoven. And it’s in C Minor - the key most closely associated with him. Another interesting point - Beethoven experimented with the trio because he wanted a genre that wasn’t well trod. He waited on string quartets because Haydn and Mozart had perfected them - he wanted some ground that was his own. Tells you about his approach, his desire to learn from others but stake out his own ground.

Personal favorite section of Beethoven 5 is the coda to the opening sonata form movement. The concluding music that takes the ‘fate motive’ and gives you one last electric shock. Maybe having such things in my head is why I’ve never used cocaine.
