THREAD 🧵 Every year on May 3, UNESCO commemorates #WorldPressFreedomDay to highlight media restrictions around the globe. To mark 30 years since the UN designated this important day, Al Jazeera’s journalists tell us what freedom of the press means to them 👇

To measure the pulse of press freedom around the globe, media watchdog Reporters Without Borders publishes an annual index. These are the countries where the media is most restricted in 2023. Mapping Media Restrictions:

According to the 2023 World Press Freedom Index, Norway tops the list with the highest global score, with North Korea ranking at the bottom of the index. Mapping Media Restrictions:

7️⃣ journalists and media workers have been killed in 2023, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders. Since 2000, 1,795 journalists have been killed globally. Mapping Media Restrictions:

On May 11, 2022, veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank, while wearing a press vest and standing with other journalists. Mapping Media Restrictions:

Some 568 journalists and media workers are currently imprisoned globally, according to Reporters Without Borders. Of them, 83 were arrested this year. Mapping Media Restrictions:

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 65 journalists are missing in 2023. In Mexico, 16 journalists vanished, followed by Iraq where 9 are missing, 8 in Syria, and 7 in Russia. Mapping Media Restrictions:

@UNESCO Should rename it to World Press Propaganda Day, there is no freedom, you all have the same agenda

@UNESCO Just because of public,... good people can no longer claim that reality can't be in contradiction with media, there seems to be something irrational in reality.🙏

@UNESCO In Germany the mainstream media have guidelines. If a journalist violate against this guidelines, he will kick out.
