🚨 THIS NUMBER SHOULD NOT EXIST The U.S. housing market is now at the most unaffordable level in history. Worse than the legendary 2006 housing bubble: The median U.S. home now costs $436,000. Five years ago? $270,000. That’s a 61.5% price increase. Wages over the same period? +29%. To qualify for a mortgage on a median-priced home today, Americans need a minimum of $127,000 in household income. The median household earns about $80,000. That means 75% of homes on the market are unaffordable for the average American family. 3 out of 4. Mortgage rates are the second punch. They went from 2.7% to 6.3% in just five years. Even if prices hadn’t moved, monthly payments would’ve nearly doubled. And here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud: On January 29th, Trump told his Cabinet he does not want housing prices to fall. He wants them higher. That’s great if you already own. It’s brutal if you’re trying to buy your first home. 99% of U.S. counties are less affordable than their historical norms. The country is short roughly 7.1 million homes. And construction is slowing. Existing home sales in 2025 are tracking around 4.1 million. That’s near the lowest level in three decades. Homeownership has fallen to 65%, down from 69% in 2004. This is the largest affordability crisis in modern U.S. housing history. Prices went up. Rates went up. Wages did not. And politicians do not want prices to fall. The average American family is not waiting for a better entry. That is the trap. They are locked out of the market. A tiny little scene in Season 1, Episode 6 of The Expanse shows Uncle Mateo, a Belter, popping open his helmet for a few seconds to yank out a sparking sensor wire that had come loose inside his helmet. He takes a big breath first to better oxygenate his bloodstream, then begins exhaling steadily as he opens the helmet. He pulls the wire, seals it, and repressurizes - and he's fine. It always got me thinking how over-the-top Hollywood usually makes exposure to vacuum in movies. But this scene actually gets the science right. (Note: In real spacesuits you can't open a helmet like this - the pressurized bubble stays sealed. But the physics of what would happen if you could is still fascinating.) You MUST exhale steadily, and here's why: The reason is Boyle's Law. When external pressure drops to zero, the air trapped in your lungs wants to expand dramatically. Even at only 4.3 psi inside the suit, that creates a huge unbalanced pressure pushing outward against the delicate alveoli. On Earth a big breath is safe because pressure is equal on both sides. In vacuum it's not - the alveoli can tear, sending air bubbles into your blood (an arterial gas embolism that can hit your brain or heart). Game over. Even if you somehow held it, you couldn't use the oxygen anyway. In vacuum the pressure gradient reverses and your lungs start stripping oxygen out of your blood. So you take that big breath to load up your bloodstream with extra oxygen, then you begin a steady exhale as you open the helmet, and… - 0–2 seconds: What little bit of air is left rushes out of your lungs. - 3–5 seconds: Your saliva starts fizzing and boiling on your tongue - that weird, carbonated, Pop-Rocks feeling. If you stay exposed without resealing: In 10–15 seconds you black out from lack of oxygen. Once you pass out, your face and body start swelling from water vapor forming in the tissues. Not the dramatic explosion of bad sci-fi - more like severe bloating, and it reverses almost completely once you repressurize. But you could last unconscious for up to approximately three minutes. Should someone reach you, seal your helmet, and repressurize, you'd have a surprisingly good chance at recovering. Uncle Mateo was fine. His exposure was very brief. He exhaled, and as a Belter, he'd probably become used to that mild Pop-Rocks feeling. NASA proved all of this with real tests in the 1960s - Jim LeBlanc's near-vacuum accident plus animal chamber studies. It's not movie nonsense. It's physics.

☄️ Of all of my space rocks, this Bjurböle is quite special, as it was recovered from the seabed, with great effort, in 1899. It is the only complete recovery of a meteorite at sea. Meteorites hit the Earth randomly, and thus ~70% of them hit the oceans and disappear forever. This claim was a reasonable assumption, since 71% of the Earth is covered by ocean, and it was recently verified by analysis of the world’s infrasound sensors used to monitor the nuclear Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The sensors recorded meteorite impacts by land and by sea, as seen in the B612 video here. Here’s is how this unique space rock recovery happened: on March 12, 1899, at 9:30pm, a bright fireball screamed over my homeland of Estonia on final approach, making a thunderous noise like artillery fire for what seemed like minutes and smashed into the Baltic Sea. Helsinki’s major newspaper Päiväleht asked for witness details and drawings to help locate the fall. As a result of Finnish citizenry’s efforts, the trajectory of the fireball was triangulated, and its impact point was determined to be in the Baltic Sea about 50 kilometers from Helsinki. Because the Baltic Sea was still frozen over in March, there was evidence of the point of impact — a three-meter hole in the surface ice. Then the recovery effort: they tried to find it by poking around with sticks, but the meteorite was 25’ down on the bedrock. So, they built a waterproof well out of wooden beams and dropped it through the hole in the ice. The well was pumped to empty out the water and mud. This did not succeed completely, but in the end a diver was able to find the fractured meteorite and pull it out. It was then displayed the following year at the World’s Fair in Paris in the Finnish pavilion. Bjurböle is a distinctive LL4 meteorite. It is unusually friable and its fine-grained creamy matrix is packed with chondrules — spherical silicate-rich droplets of fiery rain that aggregated from the dust and ice of our early solar system, before the planets formed. It also sports the catalog stamp of the Finnish Museum of Natural History (and was obtained by a meteorite trade).
