It would go on to become the top grossing film of the year and win three of its ten Academy Award Nominations including Best Picture. I don’t know how many times I saw this film growing up, but it was A LOT! Its success and impact highlighted the power of popular culture as I know I am certainly not the only one inspired by Rocky’s journey. Happy Birthday Rocky! The fight in the club (featured in this video clip) ― throwing the cake ― actually happened. I can verify that as an eyewitness. I ducked it. And the plane landing in the swimming pool right in the middle of the Admiral's tea ― that really happened.” The Wings of Eagles is based on the life of Frank “Spig” Wead and the history of U.S. Naval aviation from its inception through World War II. The film is a tribute to Wead (who died 10 years earlier, in 1947 at age of 52) from his friend, director John Ford, and was based on Wead's “We Plaster the Japs”, published in a 1944 issue of The American Magazine. John Wayne plays naval aviator-turned-screenwriter Wead, who wrote the story or screenplay for such films as Hell Divers (1931) with Wallace Beery and Clark Gable, Ceiling Zero (1936) with James Cagney, and the Oscar-nominated World War II drama They Were Expendable (1945) in which Wayne co-starred with Robert Montgomery. Hughes used the project to pressure the court into releasing Mitchum, claiming that hundreds of other jobs were in jeopardy because of Mitchum’s arrest and the film’s delay. (Hughes had started the film while Mitchum was out on bail) The plea was unsuccessful and the film was held up until Mitchum finished his sentence. Siegel said, ‘‘When Mitchum showed up for work, we shot this picture in the heart of the marijuana district in Mexico, halfway between Vera Cruz and Mexico City. Mitchum showed up absolutely out cold, having drunk a bottle and a half of tequila with his probation officer, who if anything was drunker than Mitchum. It was quite a picture. . ." With a cast as “difficult” as the characters they portrayed, the film brought together major stars such as Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, and Donald Sutherland… As a result, the atmosphere on set was sometimes tense, as everyone had strong personalities. Despite its relatively violent content for 1967 standards, the film became a box office hit and paved the way for the “anti-hero military team” genre.
