The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) remains one of Hollywood’s greatest post-war masterpieces — a deeply human portrait of soldiers struggling to rebuild their lives after World War II. The film won 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, and is still regarded as one of the most powerful films ever made about the emotional aftermath of war. Harold Russell, a real-life war veteran who lost both hands during the war, delivered an unforgettable performance that earned him two Oscars for the same role.

A Bridge Too Far is a war film that sort of boggles the mind. Featuring legends like Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Robert Redford, James Caan, and Michael Caine, the cast here is irrefutably legendary. Director Richard Attenborough pushed all his chips to the center of the table on this one. Great film.

ROCKY written by and starring Sylvester Stallone hit screens on this day in 1976. It would go on to become the top grossing film of the year and win three of its ten Academy Award Nominations including Best Picture. I don’t know how many times I saw this film growing up, but it was A LOT! Its success and impact highlighted the power of popular culture as I know I am certainly not the only one inspired by Rocky’s journey. Happy Birthday Rocky! And thank you to Sylvester Stallone for creating one of the most iconic and inspirational characters in film history! “Keep Punching!” Who’s watching Rocky tonight to celebrate?

This scene was really heartbreaking 💔🪖🎞️🎬🍿* 1917 (2019) is a British war film directed by Sam Mendes, who co-wrote it with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, inspired in part by stories from his grandfather about World War I. Set during the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the film follows two young soldiers on a mission to deliver a message that could stop a doomed attack and save hundreds of lives. In the middle of its intensity, the film quietly reflects on the courage and sacrifice of ordinary people placed in impossible situations. On this beautiful #MemorialDay, I can’t help but think of the late Robert Duvall and his performance in Apocalypse Now, which next to Saving Private Ryan is the best war film I’ve ever seen. This film drops you into Vietnam- an immersive masterpiece. Happy Memorial Day to all.

When cinema was still learning how to move, WINGS was already flying. With the camera gliding seamlessly across a crowded Paris café, this remarkable tracking shot from WINGS (1927) remains a striking example of the ambition and innovation of early filmmaking. Directed by William A. Wellman and starring Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers, Richard Arlen and Gary Cooper, WINGS follows two young pilots whose friendship is tested amid the aerial battles of World War I. At the 1st Academy Awards, WINGS made history as the first film to win the Academy Award for Outstanding Picture, the category now known as Best Picture. The Wings of Eagles (1957), starring John Wayne, Dan Dailey and Maureen O'Hara. Directed by John Ford. According to director John Ford, “Everything in the picture was true. The fight in the club (featured in this video clip) ― throwing the cake ― actually happened. I can verify that as an eyewitness. I ducked it. And the plane landing in the swimming pool right in the middle of the Admiral's tea ― that really happened.” The Wings of Eagles is based on the life of Frank “Spig” Wead and the history of U.S. Naval aviation from its inception through World War II. The film is a tribute to Wead (who died 10 years earlier, in 1947 at age of 52) from his friend, director John Ford, and was based on Wead's “We Plaster the Japs”, published in a 1944 issue of The American Magazine. John Wayne plays naval aviator-turned-screenwriter Wead, who wrote the story or screenplay for such films as Hell Divers (1931) with Wallace Beery and Clark Gable, Ceiling Zero (1936) with James Cagney, and the Oscar-nominated World War II drama They Were Expendable (1945) in which Wayne co-starred with Robert Montgomery. The supporting cast features Ward Bond, Ken Curtis, Edmund Lowe and Kenneth Tobey. This film was the third of five in which Wayne and O'Hara appeared together; others were Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), McLintock! (1963) and Big Jake (1971).

According to Don Siegel, 'The Big Steal' (1949) was an excuse to get Robert Mitchum out of jail. Hughes used the project to pressure the court into releasing Mitchum, claiming that hundreds of other jobs were in jeopardy because of Mitchum’s arrest and the film’s delay. (Hughes had started the film while Mitchum was out on bail) The plea was unsuccessful and the film was held up until Mitchum finished his sentence. Siegel said, ‘‘When Mitchum showed up for work, we shot this picture in the heart of the marijuana district in Mexico, halfway between Vera Cruz and Mexico City. Mitchum showed up absolutely out cold, having drunk a bottle and a half of tequila with his probation officer, who if anything was drunker than Mitchum. It was quite a picture. . ."
