Of course, a huge part of that is because romance is largely written by and read by women. The stories are viewed as formulaic, unrealistic, silly, and unimportant. But romance stories are very important. Romance novels are character studies. They're up-close examinations of complicated human emotions, and writing sex scenes means living in the heads of characters when they're at their most vulnerable—and often their most honest—selves. It's messy, it's fun, and it's not easy. It can also be radical, because romance novels provide an accessible delivery system for ideas and information. They can provide important reminders to readers that they deserve love and deserve to be treated well and cared for. And for some readers, romance novels are the only sex education they have safe access to so, [counts off on fingers] consent, caretaking, checking in, and mutual pleasure. I am extremely honored to be here tonight in the company of so many talented, incredible women. A woman walks into a busy pharmacy and moves up front close to the counter instead of waiting in the clearly formed line. Staff politely ask her to step back and wait like everyone else. You get to look at it every day and every month you get a big check off it, and leave it alone. Not everyone can get there, but if you get your first pass, take five and just put it into T-bills. Really boringo.

Apparently dads get postnatal depression now. And this brave chap is raising awareness of it via a Times article. I’m not saying becoming a father isn’t a big adjustment for men. Of course they should get help if that leads to depression. But it’s women whose bodies are, literally, changed by conception, pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. Not just by the physical changes and challenges, but by the hormonal changes that go with them. And this feels like just another example of women not being able to have anything for themselves - including the very thing only their bodies can do. Not every aspect of female experience needs a male equivalent.
