Just learned that 13-year-old David Raymond, the sole survivor of the attack that claimed his entire family in Kawel village, Bokkos LGA, Plateau State on June 22, has succumbed to his injuries after fighting for his life for 18 days in the hospital 😭💔😭💔 In the early hours of Monday, June 22, 2026, 13-year-old David Raymond became one of the latest young victims of Christian persecution in Nigeria’s Plateau State. For 18 days, he fought for his life in a hospital bed, after surviving an AK-47 bullet that tore through his back and stomach, leaving his intestines exposed. David survived an attack that wiped out his family because of their faith. While surgeons worked through sunrise to save him, his father, Raymond Maichibi, 40, and mother, Nanlop Raymond, 37, were laid to rest in a mass grave with 20 other Christians from their village. His relatives, devastated by the loss, could not find the strength to tell David that he was now an orphan till he passed around 1800hrs GMT on Friday July 10th. Prior to his death, David recounted that he was asleep when armed assailants broke into their home in Kawel village, Mushere district, Bokkos LGA. “They came in the night,” he said from his hospital bed. “My father tried to protect me and they shot him. My mother was hiding in the bedroom when they shot her too. I ran, and they shot me in the back.” Though he did not see their faces, David recognized the Fulani dialect spoken by the attackers. After many long hours of trying to reassure my daughter, Rafif, that the medicine in her mother’s hand is there to help her recover and come back to us healthy, I’m grateful to say that she finally understood. The sweetest moment was when Rafif started kissing her mother’s hand, as if she were praying for her to get well soon. These may seem like small gestures, but for a little girl carrying so much fear and love in her heart, they mean everything. Rafif wanted to be part of this video herself. Again and again, she tried to hold the phone in her tiny hands, eager to help record this special moment. What made her even happier was the arrival of her aunt and her cousins, who came to spend a few days with us. (Sarah’s parents had died years prior.) Sarah took refuge with a Christian family, the Abaras, and while living with them, converted to Christianity herself. Sarah’s siblings worked with local Hisbah police to have her arrested. She was detained for four days, during which she was beaten and pressured to accept the marriage she had fled. Fearing further threats after her release, the Abara family helped Sarah relocate to a neighboring state in January 2026. Her siblings then accused the Abaras of kidnapping Sarah, and the family was arraigned without legal counsel on 26 February 2026. Sarah filed a rights enforcement petition in a neighbouring state on 24 February 2026. On 26 May 2026, the court ruled in her favour, enjoining Kano State and the Hisbah from pursuing her arrest over her conversion or her refusal to marry. In its decision, the court stated the police’s actions were a “flagrant violation” of Sarah’s fundamental right to human dignity and freedom of religion. The court also ordered financial compensation for these violations against her rights. Thankful for great guys like Sean Nelson who's been on this case for awhile.
