He knew Chris Hani was likely to become the ANC's deputy president (with Nelson Mandela as president), but Mbeki strongly fought against it and stopped it from happening. After Mandela's time as president, Winnie Mandela was expected to become ANC deputy president. But Mbeki didn't like her, so he made sure she was pushed aside. When Mbeki lost to Jacob Zuma at the Polokwane conference, he tried to damage the ANC by helping start a new party called COPE. A special resolution was adopted at the Mafikeng Conference in 1997 to retain his experience within the NEC. Cyril Ramaphosa was an absent as ANC SG between 1991 and 1997, as he was occupied with CODESA negotiations and later led the ANC working group during the development of SA’s Constitution. Cheryl Carolus was compelled to act as SG during this period. Mandela eventually stepped in to assist, recognising how overwhelming the responsibilities of the SG Office were. Mandela later asked me to make myself available for the SG position, having observed my work as General Secretary of the NUM. I continued briefing Mandela on ANC matters until 2008; I went to introduce Gwede to Mandela as the new SG & told him that my job is now done. Gwede will take over. Mbeki and Zuma did not do any of that. Zuma didnt want to talk to Mbeki. Instead he got angry that Mbeki was appealing a Nicholson judgment which said he interefered in NPA operations.

When, on the evening of the 2nd of May 1994, President Nelson Mandela delivered his victory speech to a cheering crowd in the Carlton Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, announcing that he had won the election and would be South Africa's next President, he was unequivocally clear that the GNU was called by the ANC as the MAJORITY party. I know exactly what the situation was, and what he said. I was there, and as then National Spokesperson of the ANC, I worked with him on that speech before he stepped to the podium to deliver it.
