Adam Driver wasn’t convincing enough as a villain to carry the Star Wars sequel trilogy, or to be the indirect reason for ending the most iconic character in fiction. They needed someone who could make Kylo Ren feel powerful and believable without constantly overacting.

I know a lot of people have strong feelings on the Sequel Trilogy, but it’s still amazing to me as to just how incredible Kylo Ren’s introduction is at the start of The Force Awakens. Being the first Star Wars movie in a little over decade, it put a lot of pressure on a new antagonist that wasn’t Darth Vader, but in just over a minute, JJ Abrams and Adam Driver made Kylo Ren debatably just as iconic.
