Monday, December 18, 2023, 1:17 PM, PDT: 545 DM Low pressure is starting to develop 300 miles off the coast of Oregon. This is the start of the formation of the secondary low, which will emerge and have a southward trajectory. This low-pressure system will move into Southern California on Thursday and Thursday night. As of right now, intensive rapid development is expected within the next 24-30 hours over the Central Pacific. This system will tap into subtropical moisture south of the Hawaiian Islands in the next 32 hours, bringing copious amounts of rain to the southern California region. There is an increasingly elevated chance of thunderstorms on Thursday. The trajectory and positioning of solution models have the system going close to Point Conception early Thursday afternoon into Thursday night, which will provide the perfect setup for rainfall from Santa Barbara down to San Diego. If the main low pressure gets within about 65 to 130 miles of the Channel Islands, rainfall totals will increase across Ventura County, LA County, Orange County, and San Diego County. Rainfall totals are still expected to be between 0.80 to 2.0 inches. However, if thunderstorms do develop, rainfall totals of 1.8 to 4.0 inches seem justified with this particular system. More updates will continue as the system nears our region. The first system is moving into parts of Southern California this afternoon, which will moisten up the atmosphere and prepare us for the second system. There is no offshore flow at all, which is a good sign for further storm development as the lower levels of the atmosphere moisten up. #cutofflow #ElNino #Californiastorms

A 60-year-old man died after falling into an open manhole on Khairani Road in Sakinaka on Thursday afternoon while civic drain maintenance work was underway. The deceased, identified as Aslam Sheikh, allegedly stepped into an uncovered manhole. According to eyewitnesses, three contractual workers had removed the manhole cover to carry out drain maintenance. Sheikh, who was reportedly talking on his mobile phone, did not notice the opening and fell into the stormwater drain. The workers immediately lowered a ladder into the manhole in an attempt to rescue him. However, they recovered only his umbrella and slippers. Due to the strong flow of rainwater inside the drain, officials said it was impossible to determine the direction in which he had been swept away, triggering a search operation by the Mumbai Fire Brigade.

Significant rainfall for Southern California starting as early as Wednesday night through Saturday, but this is a progressive storm pattern that’s going to continue to escalate due to the warming of the Pacific so this is just the start of what’s to come. We need to be prepared for potential mudslides in recent major burn areas such as Easton and Pacific Palisades burn scar zones. Next Thursday through next Sunday now the potential for the system to have more major impacts such as road flooding, high wind potential, and possibly even isolated power outages with some strong to severe thunderstorms that could be embedded with the system. The two moisture sources originate from the Marshall Islands, and the Hawaiian Islands are trending now. Before this big weather shift all comes about we are going to be seeing again 92 to 95° temperatures a light Santa Ana wind event and offshore flow majority of Santa Barbara to San Diego counties, this upcoming Saturday to Monday. We are going to get pretty toasty across our region and then the rains will come almost similar to November 1997 all over again. #CAwx

Thursday, May 28, 2026, 7:17 AM: It's not every day you wake up late in May and see a robust system that originated from off the coast of the Siberian peninsula three weeks ago now affecting California with a deep, unusually cold Siberian 552 DM low axis. Currently, this system is causing stormy weather in the Bay Area and unstable weather trending for a large part of our region with multiple embedded disturbances rotating around the parent low that is slowly moving throughout the state. There's a possible chance of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon in San Joaquin, Bakersfield, and maybe as far south as Santa Barbara County. One of these embedded disturbances may even reach as far south as western Los Angeles County by at least 7PM. However, the third low axis creates deep cyclonic flow there may be more showers due to a deep marine layer deck hovering 4,300 feet from Santa Barbara to San Diego counties. The temperatures will remain very March-like in the 67°F - 72°F range, and even colder in the mountains above 6,000 feet at 51°F - 54°F during the day, and at night 32°F - 35°F at higher elevations above 7,000 feet. Jacob explains that if you consider evolution as an optimizer, the gradients flow in a really surprising way. Naively, it seems like evolution should want you to live longer (more time to have babies and care for your kin). Jacob explains 3 complications on the naive picture: 1. Baseline mortality was brutal throughout most of history. Even without aging, you'd likely die from infection, predation, or accident before reaching 50. Brent touched $91.42 this morning and fell back to $87.96 on a hint of talks. Four tracked ships crossed Hormuz on Sunday. No visible LNG carrier has crossed since Thursday. Those are not one story. The war has split energy into three different recovery clocks. Crude runs on the fastest clock. Gulf exports have already clawed back to 12 to 13 million barrels a day this month, still 32% below the prewar peak, with Saudi Arabia pushing 75% of its flow out through Yanbu. Inventories, bypass routes, reserve releases and dying demand mean lost crude can reappear in days. That is why Brent swings 4 dollars on a mere rumour. It prices the odds of a reopened corridor, nothing slower. Refined products run on a slower clock. A barrel is not diesel. Global refining output ran about 5 million barrels a day below last year through the second quarter, American refineries are at 96.2% utilization, and distillate stocks sit 11% under the five year average even after last week's build. There is no strategic reserve of conversion capacity. LNG runs on two clocks at once. Near term, seven laden Qatari carriers float inside the Gulf holding 0.57 million tonnes, inventory that exits in a burst if a corridor opens and forces production cuts if it stays shut. Medium term, Iran's March strikes knocked out 2 of Qatar's 14 trains, 17% of its capacity, for three to five years by QatarEnergy's own count. The world has replaced roughly three quarters of the lost Gulf volume from elsewhere, so this is not simple shortage. Substitution is real, rate limited, and paid in demand destruction. China's gas use is down 4%. And Henry Hub sits near $2.89 with storage above average, not because America is immune but because its gas is export gated. Abundance behind a liquefaction door is not global supply. The scarce asset is no longer the molecule. It is time to usable energy. Brent prices the barrel. The crisis prices everything the barrel must become next.
