since colonization of parts of india by europeans even before british , communities even newly converte christians claim to be brahmins or reported to be brahmins inorder to support church propagation. bitish needed social heirarchy as it existed in UK. since it did not exist in india with no concept of blue blood families but rulers being changed as per capability with fluidity from different communities they flaunted brahman / castes as heirarchical identity instead of profession based identity. brahmins were educate by thier families even after gurukuls were shut down and this evolved as caste just like other profession based communtieis - it was the only available livelihood without gurukuls
