FOUR SUSPECTS CHARGED, ONE WANTED, AND TWO SOUGHT FOLLOWING SPA ROBBERIES IN MARKHAM AND TORONTO Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit, working jointly with the Toronto Police Service Hold-Up Squad, have charged four suspects, have issued a warrant for one other suspect following an investigation into a series of spa robberies in Markham and Toronto. Police are also seeking two more suspects in this investigation. On November 23, 2024 at approximately 3:20 a.m., a spa in the area of Dufferin Street and Wilson Avenue in Toronto was robbed at gunpoint by three suspects. An hour later, at approximately 4:20 a.m., a second robbery occurred at a spa in the area of Birchmount Road and 14th Avenue in Markham. Three suspects forced their way into the business while armed with a firearm. They stole one of the victim’s vehicles and fled with a quantity of cash. In both incidents the suspects arrived in a stolen white Acura. On November 28, 2024, investigators located the stolen Acura and three suspects were taken into custody for possession of the stolen vehicle. On December 6, 2024, at approximately 1 a.m., a third armed robbery of a spa occurred in the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Steeles Avenue in Toronto. On December 8, 2024, two additional robberies were reported, one at approximately 3:20 a.m., in the area of Carlingview Drive and Renforth Drive, and the other at 3:45 a.m., in the area of Finch Avenue and Keele Street. In both incidents the suspects arrived at the scene in a stolen Toyota Highlander. On December 10, 2024, two search warrants were executed at residences in the City of Toronto with the assistance of the York Regional Police Emergency Response Unit. At around 5 p.m. today, two individuals, identified as Nlibe Otanpi and Balon Matthew (who claims to be an area coordinator for the NDC), were arrested by Immigration officers at the Sangba Inland checkpoint. They were found with two disassembled G3 rifles in a box, along with about 40 rounds of ammunition. The two, who were on separate motorbikes, attempted to bribe the officers with GHS 20 when the officers insisted on conducting a search of their box. The suspects immediately tried to flee after the officers rejected the bribe, but they were arrested following a chase. One of the suspects, Balon Matthew, who also claimed to be an area coordinator of the NDC, gave two different explanations for how they acquired the weapons. First, he stated that they had purchased the weapons from a military man, with each rifle costing GHS 25,000. He later claimed they obtained the weapons from his uncle in Accra.

Johan Jose Rangel Martinez (21) and Franklin Jose Pena Ramos (26) were seen on surveillance cameras with the little girl before she was found dead in a north Houston creek early Monday. Investigators used surveillance cameras to track the movements of Martinez and Ramos before and after Jocelyn was strangled and dumped in the creek. They said the suspects ate at a restaurant late Sunday and they met Jocelyn on their way and the three walked to a nearby convenience store. They left the store and walked to the bridge where Jocelyn was killed.

Using out Air Support Unit helicopter, Air2, the vehicle was located in the City of Toronto where the suspects fled but were quickly taken into custody. The vehicle used by the suspects was confirmed to be stolen. Of the four suspects charged, Marlando MITCHELL, 24 of Brampton, and the two youths, were out on a combined 10 release orders at the time of the incident. One of the youths was also on probation. “The teamwork demonstrated by York Regional Police is a testament to the professionalism and commitment our officers have in pursuing individuals who commit violent acts in our communities,” states Police Chief Jim MacSween. “Of the four suspects arrested, one adult and two youths were out on release orders. Two men were arrested in Epworth yesterday evening after they were found in possession of US$9,000 in counterfeit banknotes. The suspects used the fake money to pay for accommodation at a local lodge. They initially managed to deceive the lodge staff, but the scam was later discovered while they were still staying there, leading to their arrest. During investigations, it was established that a silver Land Rover visited the lodge daily to collect the two suspects. We also managed to obtain a photo of the vehicle. A 16th suspect was arrested during the investigation for interfering with deputies while they were detaining the theft suspects. Store employees contacted the Sheriff's Office after observing the suspects walking around the store, concealing bottled drinks and some food within their clothes. The group of people appeared to all know each other, and arrived at the store in three separate vehicles - a BMW, a Tesla, and a Honda Accord.
