A trickier way would be some sort of steel sleeve on one pole, painted to be almost invisible, then shaving down the other pole to fit snugly.

If it just decorative , I would have no concerns about wooden dowel and wood glue . With the female being so off center it’s gonna be hard to match up a bolt at this point and it not be off center.
