To me this clip showcases why user defined max speed needs to come back sooner than later. I understand what Tesla's vision is for the future and why removing speed control is the best idea. The reality is though - we are not there yet. There is not one...

I would be way more interested in being able to override the speed limit and submit it for crowd sourcing speed limit corrections than I am for the return of max speed settings. That could also fix this.

The crowd-sourced speed limit would be so so good.

As shown in your video, the fundamental issue is that they have not mastered reading speed limit signs. If they do this, the idea of speed profiles become solved. In this case, I don’t mind the lack of max speed. When it works now it’s great, but when it doesn’t, it’s annoying. There seems to be an invisible map layer that overrides the speed limit signs the car can see. Sometimes it displays them on the screen and ignores them, sometimes it won’t even pick up on a sign it passes. Annoying!

I am of the mindset that they should solve the problem before taking away the bandaid solution (max speed). I don't see the harm in allowing the end user to control the max speed until they can nail speed limits.

QUICK TIP: to change speed profile super quick, use the scroll wheel left/right motion. You can go from sloth to Mad Max in under 1 second. But have to agree on the max speed though.

Good call - I knew that you could do that but have been scrolling instead for some reason. Thanks for the heads up.

This is just going to be so difficult, because you’re saying you’re frustrated that it’s going 90KPH in an 80, but I’d hate it if the car went the speed limit on the highway 😂 most of them in PA are 55mph or 70mph. In 55s everyone goes around 70, in 70s everyone goes 80-90. Maybe they just need to make sloth match speed limit identically for cases like yours, but I think (at least in the USA) that most people would consider going the exact speed limit on the highway dangerous, because literally nobody does and you’re just getting blown by and weaved around by everyone if you do.

Profilbild von Devin Olsen

I am in standard and was behind a cop so I put it into chill hoping it wouldn't try to pass. It did - so I put it into sloth but since it mis-read the speed limit even sloth was trying to speed. Sloth will go the EXACT speed limit - that's how it works right now. The issue is in my clip FSD misread the speed limit 4 times - so putting it into a profile that goes the speed limit doesn't work if the car can't 'read' the speed limit correct.

Profilbild von Mike P
Mike Pvor 10 Monaten

Do you find that when it does this that it will adjust to traffic flow around every time, or it will go way faster/slower than traffic? It looks like it’s trying to match the flow of traffic even when it’s getting the sign reading wrong. I’ve had it read signs badly wrong like this on the highway, but it’ll just go with the flow of traffic, so the screen will say 40mph in a 55, and it’ll be going 65mph, blending into the flow of traffic. Obviously it thinks it’s going 25 over but in this case you’d want it to.

Profilbild von Devin Olsen
Devin Olsenvor 10 Monaten

All the profiles except sloth definitely worth about vibes more than the speed limit - which I can understand. If it misread a speed limit as 30KM/h a 100 km/h zone it wouldn’t slow to 30 (in any of the upper 4 profiles). I get that and I’m cool with it. Sloth is the only profile that’ll disregard everything around it in favour of whatever it thinks the speed is. Which sounds great on paper until it reads 60 in and 80 on a highway and then it becomes a huge issue. That’s my whole argument and why I think (for now) Tesla should bring back speed control.

Profilbild von Mike P

Yeah seems like the main issue here is bad sign reading. Wonder if they can patch stuff like that with better map data

Profilbild von Codetaur

yeah being able to set an exact speed limit with a very convenient input helped compensate for the most common FSD issue, so removing it makes that issue way more obvious and annoying.

It's like they removed a temporary solution without having a permanent fix for the speeds. I appreciate you and the other FSD pioneers like @DirtyTesLa for highlighting the concern and letting Tesla know.

Profilbild von Trent Sizemore

So many speed limit signs are just wrong. Construction sites and variable LED signs are always changing speed limits. Maps can’t keep up with those changes, so the vehicle needs to be accurately reading them without misinterpreting minimum speed signs, truck speeds, etc. Until that is happening, we need some manual input!

Profilbild von Blue Earth

Agree. The day we get Unsupervised, flip the software and feel free to take away the speed control. Until then, I'm not in a Cybercab, it's my car and I'm still responsible. Tesla needs to give FSD users the ability to manage the car.

Someone from the FSD development team needs to spend some driving time in Ohio with CA plates. Better make that several employees as they will quickly lose their lawful ability to drive due to radar and close to zero speeding tolerance. All areas of the country are not like CA.

The problem is, we don't have robotaxis, we are still responsible for the car and speeding tickets. I almost Mad Max'd by a cop today and just hit the brake and took over to slow down. I love the way Mad Max drives, going around slow cars, etc. but I don't need to go 60 in a 40.

FSD 14.x needs a lot of work at choosing the optimal speed based on conditions, speed limit, traffic flow and especially personal preference. User has to have a parameter offset and an ad hoc override available if needed. Crazy this went away--terrible idea on so many levels.

Profilbild von Emilx2000
Emilx2000vor 10 Monaten

The issue here is not the fact that the user cannot set a desired max speed, the issue is the fact that FSD recognized the speed limit incorrectly, so fixing the incorrect speed limit would solve the issue completely without the need for a max speed offset.

I agree. Yesterday I turned from a 15 mph street on to a 35 mph street. But it still read 15 mph. No profile could fix it. Just let me adjust the max speed. What's wrong with giving me control. Scroll up/down to adjust speed & left/right to change profile.

Disengage. My guess is Tesla needs us to make a black white decision. If it's too fast in Sloth, just disengage. Scrolling max speed up and down is a noisy signal.

Technically it was safe to drive at that speed so other than the cop, it was perfectly safe. Too bad the cop doesn't care about all that. haha

Profilbild von Se_V11

I agree, brother. I just got V14 FSD and my Tesla keeps going faster even on Sloth, lol. I drive near areas where animals cross the street constantly, but I don’t want my Tesla to slam the brakes to avoid hitting an animal. Instead, I hope I could drop the speed a little but have Mad Max drive smarter and maneuver better but not speed to get a ticket, lol.

I think if you continue scrolling past sloth it should start to reduce max speed. I live on a gravel road and have to manually drive it every day, since V14, to keep from throwing rocks on my new Model Y. On one section it wants to go 60 and the rest is 35. I want to keep it under 20.

To me this highlights two actual problems Tesla still needs to solve and it’s not related to them bringing back max speed controls. 1. Speed limits and poor navigation data. This is likely the biggest remaining hurdle for Tesla is navigation data not matching the real world. This should be crowd sourced in real time, not relying on third party companies to make updates months later. As an aside, the current logic FSD is using to “read” speed limit signs is flawed and needs additional work. 2. If FSD is going to be “sentient” (I hate this term btw) it needs to understand police vehicles and not speed past them. This goes for stopped or driving police vehicles. You, I, and every 16 with a new license knows how to identify a cop car and not speed past them no matter how urgent you drive is. All that to say, we are still a few orders of magnitude away from FSD understanding the world like we do. Doesn’t mean it’s unsafe now, just limited in its comprehension of the world.

So it is now the driving profile that is wrong. It is the speed limit reading and map data. If they didn't do this, it won't highlight the main issue which is getting the speed limit info correct. Robotaxi scenario, it will be flying in slower speed zone.

I think the logic for Tesla is that they are building FSD for an unsupervised world, so a user-defined max speed doesn't make sense. Instead, you set your preferred driving style—the same way you would convey that preference to an Uber driver.

Bc @Tesla can't hold the speed limit, it makes it unusable on Australian regional highways without constant human "adjustments" to the accelerator, making it substantially less self driving.

Elon's strategy is to force optimal solutions by not covering problems with a intermediary band aid or cruch that would pull money and time away from the end goal solution. It means living with an imperfect product for now which highly motivates them to get to that end solution.
