Today a driver almost killed my friend on Western Bypass.

My small contribution to rider / biker safety, I always drive behind them with hazard lights on, escorting them for a range to a place that I'll perceive safer, then proceed on my journey. I'll only alert them at that moment of my departure to look over themselves.

Clearly, the Bima driver is on the wrong here. But, I think cycling on high speed freeways should be illegal. It posses a huge risk to both cyclist and vehicles, considering how bad Matatus and Prados are usually driven. Just look for a rural highway with less traffic.

It’s unfortunate what happened to your friend, and wishing him a quick recovery. However, I’ve driven several times on the Western Bypass, and it’s a fast road. Your safety car should have been directly behind you, with enough distance from the group, with hazards on.

Are you supposed to be riding on that road. Maximum speed limit is 110kph. Check the bylaws on this.

Speed limit on the Western Bypass is 80Kph. Is there a law that prohibits cyclists from riding on bypasses?

@KamauKiserian Only two sections of Thika Road have a speed limit of 50kph - Clayworks and Toll. The rest is 110 and 80 depending on vehicle type

When you are on a joy ride it should be fun but also safe. If you are that many and it’s no competition then ride in a single file and always have an escort car at the rear to warn drivers you are cycling. The cameraman was clearly doing the wrong thing in the middle of the road!
