Today at Phoenix Mercury training camp, coach Nate Tibbetts talked about Kahleah Copper and Satou Sabally’s shot selection. Tibbetts refers to the midrange as the “manure strip,” and has said Sabally has done a good job avoiding taking midrange jumpers. #WNBA #ValleyTogether

If Phoenix doesn't do well this year. Tibbetts will be gone. Midrange jumpers are better than blocked layups.

I hope this coach doesn’t turn this into unwatchable hoops. Just seeing players jack up 3’s is going to turn into unwatchable hoops just like the boring NBA during the regular season 🤦🏽‍♀️. He will be gone if this team looks like players jacking up 3’s with no defense 🤦🏽‍♀️

PROBLEM: Defenses guarding the paint/3PT line; heavily contested shots SOLUTION: Shoot mid-range jumpers to spread the defense/create opportunities for drives to the basket/passes to cutters. EASY SHOTS! #Basketball101🏀 Screw the “analytics & “advanced stats”

"[Alyssa Thomas] is a competitor, she's a winner, and she's tough. The one thing she is not is cheap." __ Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts Also, Alyssa Thomas taking a cheap shot at Angel Reese which could have caused a career ending head or neck injury — and AT walked away without even checking to make sure Angel was okay… AT is a dirty player — this not only about Caitlin Clark, and the WNBA must address this matter immediately 👇🏽

JJ Redick joked in his pregame media about how Chris Finch told him he was taking too many midrange shots when Finch was a coach of Redick's in New Orleans -- despite Redick telling Finch he had a "top 5 midrange efficiency for 8 seasons in a row". I asked Finch about that and, more broadly, about coaching shot selection. (His answer starts out as a joke, but I thought also had some good nuggets in there about teaching shot selection -- referencing the value of the midrange showing up with Ant's game-sealing shot in Portland on Wednesday.)

I asked Satou Sabally why she and the Mercury enjoy being underestimated. “To me, it’s a disrespect to what those two (Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas) have done. They’re gold medalists. They’re all-stars. To put disrespect on people who have literally been in the league for so long, that just fuels us.”

Last night Kahleah Copper gets a shot to the ribs/midsection and takes off for the play. Nothing said about her needing to get in the gym, toughen up. Seems to only apply to one person in the WNBA…

Here's Ayo Dosunmu talking about what he's reading in pick and roll coverage and why he's taking more midrange shots in Minnesota after those were prohibited in Chicago. "In Chicago, midrange shots was really prohibited. It was 3s and layups, no midrange shots unless it's the end of the shot clock. Here, we got Rudy, he's setting big screens. So if you can set up pick and roll, you come off Rudy, you open." Dosunmu took 4 "long" midrange shots in 45 games in Chicago this season before being traded to Minnesota. And he's taken 12 in 15 games for the Wolves. Dosunmu has also nearly doubled the frequency in which he's taking shots from floater range. Dosunmu took 86% of his shots in Chicago at the rim or from 3. In Minnesota, he's becoming a three-level scorer. And his eFG% has stayed almost exactly the same.

2026 Tay Kinney is one of the top guards in the class — has a 6-foot-6+ wingspan at 6-foot-2, has elite speed, quick twitch with the ball, gets downhill, able to create for others, has an excellent midrange shot making game, and has a bag of creative strong finishes at the rim.

Today I had the opportunity to cover Bills training camp as a media member representing The Buffalo News. Not sure how many questions Joe Brady has fielded about Keonta Jenkins since becoming head coach, but excited to write about the LB fighting for a spot on the 53.
