President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has spoken out strongly against xenophobia and Afrophobia in South Africa, saying that South Africans do not have to kill fellow Africans to resolve labour-related issues. President Hichilema reminded South Africans of the sacrifices Zambia made during the struggle against apartheid, arguing that bridges and other infrastructure in Zambia were bombed by the apartheid regime while the Zambian government was supporting Umkhonto weSizwe and the African National Congress in their fight for liberation. Zambia paid a heavy price for that solidarity because it believed in African brotherhood and the liberation of fellow Africans. He argued that this spirit of African brotherhood should not disappear today because of what he described as a xenophobic mentality that has gripped parts of South Africa. President Hichilema said what is happening in South Africa is wrong and unacceptable, stressing that legitimate concerns about jobs, labour and immigration cannot justify violence against fellow Africans. His message is essentially that the solidarity Africans showed South Africans during the struggle against apartheid cannot be forgotten now that South Africa is free.

South African political activist Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi talks about the impact of the PayPal Mafia on South African politics. Who are the PayPal Mafia? The PayPal Mafia includes Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, David Sacks, and Roelof Botha, who have roots in South Africa, particularly during the apartheid era and now have links to the Trump administration. Some of these individuals, such as Thiel and Sacks, were born in South Africa or grew up within the South African diaspora. Thiel, in particular, has a controversial history, having allegedly defended apartheid as “economically sound” during his time as a student at Stanford. Some sources mention the influence of the Ossewabrandwag, a pro-Nazi organisation active in South Africa during World War II, which further highlights the complex and troubling historical context surrounding some members of the PayPal Mafia. Roelof Botha is the grandchild of apartheid’s infamous foreign minister, Pik Botha, who went to America to defend the apartheid regime during its last days. The PayPal mafia are linked to the baseless and false attacks on South Africa that it is pursuing a genocide against white Afrikaners resulting in the Trump administration imposing aid sanctions against South Africa.

“The xenophobic a77ack happening in South Africa is not a reflection of who we are. Most South Africans are against it, sadly we’re quiet about it. Our constitution rejects this. Only 2% of crime in South Africa are led by immigrants. Nigeria gave us $61 billion during the apartheid; that’s a third of South Africa’s budget in a year.” — South African man says.

This is a great day for democracy in South Africa. Today we vote for the stability and the extension of our democracy. Today South Africa decides on the future of our country and I have no doubt that once again the people will invest their confidence and give the mandate to the African National Congress to continue to lead our country. #IamVotingANC
